A plan for a major new arts centre in Aberdeen yesterday received £4m funding from the Scottish Arts Council.

The city's Peacock Visual Arts were awarded the funds, part of a £11m package given to four new buildings by the SAC.

The money will go towards a £13m building in Union Terrace Gardens in the centre of Aberdeen, which will offer more than 3600 square metres of exhibition spaces. The centre will also provide printing workshops; television studio; library; dance facilities, and a restaurant, bar and kitchen.

The building has been dubbed "The Northern Light" due to its north-facing glass terraces and is expected to open in 2010. A scale model of the building is currently on show at the Glasgow Art Fair.

Lindsay Gordon, director of Peacock Visual Arts, said: "The new centre will be a beacon of creativity in the north of Scotland and help position Aberdeen on a par with other northern European cultural centres such as Copenhagen and Helsinki."

Elsewhere in the awards, Greenock Arts Guild received £2,685,540 to replace their existing building with a new modern theatre and arts centre in the town's harbour.

Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop received £2,370,900 to construct the first purpose-built, open-access sculpture facility in the UK, which will replace ESW's existing premises in Leith.

Shetland Arts Development Agency got £2,120,000 for Mareel - a new cinema and music venue in Lerwick, Shetland, for live performances that will seat 300.
