Missing headteacher found dead
WILLIAM TINNINGMarch 27 2008

A Borders primary head teacher who disappeared after an inspector's visit to her school has been found dead.

Irene Hogg, 54, failed to turn up at Glendinning Terrace Primary in Galashiels following the Easter weekend.

The school had been visited by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education officials before the break.

It was feared the "depressed" teacher may have been concerned about the school's performance in the review.

Staff and pupils were coming to terms with the news of her death today.

A statement issued by Scottish Borders Council said: "We are all deeply shocked and distressed by this tragic news.

"We will make a more detailed statement in the near future but at the moment our focus is on providing support to Miss Hogg's pupils and colleagues.

"We would like to extend our profound sympathy to her parents and family. This is a dreadful loss."

Ms Hogg, headteacher at Glendinning for about 10 years, was last seen near her home in Bowden, near Newtown St Boswells, on Sunday evening.

Education officials from Scottish Borders Council attended the school on Wednesday afternoon to speak to parents about her disappearance.

Lothian and Borders Police appealed for information after becoming concerned for her welfare.
