Brown and Sarkozy urge action over credit crunch:
Gordon Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy today called for greater international co-operation to prevent a repeat of the credit crunch.
The Prime Minister said they had agreed a "co-ordinated approach" was needed to improve transparency and stability.
Mr Brown told a joint press conference in north London: "We will press for a co-ordinated approach in the international financial community for disclosing and dealing with the problems that now exist in write-offs and off-balance sheet behaviour."
Mr Brown said the two men had discussed nuclear proliferation, including ideas for helping states achieve civil nuclear capability in return for their agreeing not to develop nuclear weapons.
They also talked about human rights issues around the world, including Tibet and China.
President Sarkozy insisted he "reserved the right" to boycott the Olympic Games' opening ceremony in Beijing - by which time France will hold the EU presidency.
However, he stressed he would spend the next months trying to "pacify" the situation, and said he recognised that Britain was in a different position because it was due to host the Games in 2012.
"I reserve the right to say whether or not I will attend the opening ceremony," he added.
Mr Brown flatly ruled out a UK boycott, saying: "We will not be boycotting the Olympic Games. Britain will be attending the Olympic Games ceremony."
Their call came after Sarkozy, accompanied by his wife, the model Carla Bruni, yesterday began his first state visit to Britain.
Addressing both Houses of Parliament, he called for a new era of closer co-operation between Britain and France.
In a speech in Westminster's Royal Gallery, Mr Sarkozy said it was time for Britain and France to "put behind us our old rivalries" and work together on issues from climate change to EU reform.

[bold]ACTUALLY HE ASKED FOR CLOSER COOPERATION BETWEEN ENGLAND AND FRANCE. NO DOUBT HE KNEW THAT SCOTLAND WOULD BE COOPERATIVE ANYWAY AS OLD ALLIANCE PARTNERS[/bold] (Did Brown flinch at this absence of Brittishness? The Presidents later remarks about the number of Brits living in France perhaps reassured him?)

Saw the whole speech on tv yesterday. Gorbals Michael Martin who was born in a puddle in Govan or Springburn, I forget , anyway he's a shameful and disgusting piece of work , slobbered and spluttered while introducing Sarkozy to Gordon Brown and the rest of the Brit Jocks of the '' peoples republic of north lanarkshire.''
David
The '' Auld Alliance'' ceased on 1603 at the Union of the Crowns. And another death blow to it was Scotland became calvinist under John Knox who preferred protestant England to catholic France. 200 years later Scottish cannon fodder troops were instrumental in defeating Napolean at Waterloo.
Sarkozy never mentioned Dunkirk or in France where its called the '' Great betrayel '' or the sinking of the French navy at Oran and killing 3000 French sailors on Churchills orders. Its funny how these things are air brushed out of history.

must have been nice for prince charles to kiss a woman for a change, rather than something more equine.
as for sarkozy and brown politically, they have a great deal in common; principally a failure to do anything worthwhile except mince around since being in charge.

Brown talks of Scotlands 'partnership' in the UK.
The BBC and other new agancies translated Sarkozy talking about 'Angleterre' et les 'Anglais' to Britain and British. Bless them.
All the French press, our closest mainland Euriopean neighbour only talk of Sarkozy meeting England:

Even when talking about the EU treaty signed recently between from UK state and a supposedly Scottish PM, Europe Sarkozy stated:
"C’est ce que j’ai fait en déployant tous mes efforts pour convaincre l’Angleterre de signer le traité simplifié. Parce que l’Europe a besoin de l’Angleterre", meaning 'Thats why I deployed all my efforts to conbvince England to sign the simplified treaty. Because Europe needs England'.
Scotland is completely a non entity in Europe, everyone at all levels, see the UK as an English political state, which it is really. England wil continue to be a mjor player in Europe as part of a rump UK but Scotland badly needs recognition.
How to you encorage investment into a non entity? Tough job!
Whether Scotland needs to be part of the EU or just a member of other European bodies is another debate but currently Scotland is Invisible, even to our neighbours.

No doubt, in France people are very aware of Scotland - but only in the sense that it is a province of England. They know we don't like being called English - they think, who would want to be mistaken for their colonial rulers?
As for the BBC, I noticed this too. Shame on them. If a foreigner refers to the UK as 'England', they should not mis-translate it to save the blushes of unionists, Mr Brown especially.

The French president made some intriguing points yesterday.
Mr Sarkozy called for a “new Franco-British fraternity” to pursue the reform of global governance. The holy grail!
Secondly he confirmed that he will send extra troops to Afghanistan to join the Nato fight there, [bold]provided[/bold] other alliance members agree to a broader political strategy for the country. But this political strategy depends on enlisting more help from Afghanistan's neighbours in settling the country.
Reform of global governance and Afghanistan are linked. Why are only a few Nato countries fighting in Afghanistan? Moreover it is suggested that the Afghan government wants closer relations with its neighbours and rivals to Nato, such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

LOL. Elle est, sans doute, tres mignone! (But the poor woman had to put up with being kissed by Charlie... it really is tough at the top sometimes).
I agree; to translate Angleterre as Britain takes a leap of the imagination, a rather poor translator, or a lickspittle of Brown's Labotory and Unionist Party doing what he was told. I shouldn't think that the French President gave Ecosse, or Paye de Galles, or Irlande du Nord a second thought.
I was just wondering what all this cost, and how much of it could have been done in a printed speech being given to all the MPs, and Lords. (After all, I don't imagine many of them understood a word of what he said.) That would have meant Sarko coulda stayed home and got on with his work, all the MPs and Peers could have got on with collecting their expenses, and the Queen could have given a dinner for all the OAPs of Windsor.
I bet the cost of the wine alone last night will have been a frightening figure which would have run a ward in a hospital for 6 months, and these people just drank it then relieved themselves in the royal bogs!
Sarkozy is about as popular in France as Brown is in Scotland. They can both look forward to retirement pretty soon.

(Sigh) Another junket, another 'call' for 'someone' to do 'something' about 'something else'.
I understand the niceties of diplomacy and international relations. I also understand why Sarko had to have his tete-a-tete with Queen Elizabeth to go well (to repair his tattered image at home). What I don't understand is why the speech-and-soundbite writers can't come up with something a little more original and interesting than 'a call for someone to do something about something else'.
Does Downing Street have absolutely no influence over the City? Does the Elysee Palace have no influence over the Societe General and the Bourse?
How about a combined statement to the effect that, "The rest of the world can do what it likes but we're going to put our banks' executives on bread and water in an unheated garret for a year."?

Donnelly....
London having the Olympics in 2012.... or maybe 2013 or 14 depending on whether things get built, and if they work, and, judging by what happend today at Terminal 5, the Londoners aren't just too great at that sort of stuff, no matter how much money is thrown at it.
And, of course Brown will go to the Olympics. Did you ever know a Labour politician turn down a freeby?
That's Chinese for "Taxi for Martin"?

Look Van Helsing... some of us don't [italic]want[/italic] to be part of BIG IMPORTANT countries.
What good does it do the average Scot that he is part of a country that is a permanent member of the Security Council? NONE. it means he has to pay taxes for nuclear weapons; it mean he has to pay for government members to go roaming all over the world telling other people how to live. It means he has to pay for fellow countrymen to fight in wars that only make the overall situation worse , and bring no benefit to him.
Some of us would be content to have a little country like Denmark or Norway, Iceland , Ireland, Sweden, Finland... one where the government makes sure that the people have a decent way of life. One where the Prime Minister interests himself, not in grandstanding on the world stage, but in the little things that actually make ordinary people's lives bearable or unbearable. Like enough Pension to heat the house in the cold wet winters.
Who cares if Mr Salmond never gets to have a summit with Mr Sarkosy. I mean tell me:-
How did that dinner at Windsor Castle benefit you? How did the talks with Brown benefit you? How did all that parading about in coaches and horses, and people in suites of clothes that cost more that 3 months of an OAP's income help you?

Yet another initiative for regulating world finances? Many mechanisms for coordinating action have been around for years, such as the UN system, the G7/8, and the World Trade Organisation. But there's been little political will to act.
For example when the City of London was recently given the accolade of top money launderer in the world, the Treasury trumpeted the City's success, citing as one of its strengths the UK's policy of regulating with a "light touch".
Perhaps the Scottish government will take a different view.
