Goldie Hawn received a hostile reception in Glasgow last night from protesters opposed to her involvement in a fundraising dinner for the Jewish National Fund (JNF).

Police said that around 150 people joined the demonstration outside the Hilton Hotel in the city centre, where the American actress attended the banquet as a guest speaker.

The protest was staged by the Scottish Palestinian Solidarity Campaign against the JNF's land purchases in the Gaza strip. John Wight, spokesman for the group, said: "The protest went very well."

The JNF, which has a branch in Glasgow, is reported to have said that the event would raise money to build a reservoir in the Gaza strip, which would benefit both Jews and Palestinians.

Hawn was due to entertain guests at the Hilton last night, including the Israeli ambassador Ron Prosor, with a talk on Laughter is the Best Medicine. The actress replaced scheduled speaker Michael Douglas, who backed out of the engagement last month.

Strathclyde Police had a presence outside the hotel as the protest took place.

A spokeswoman for the force said police had been informed in advance of the demonstration and that no arrests had been made.
