A police investigation is under way into claims pupils were abused at a residential school for vulnerable girls.

The Care Commission alerted police after allegations were made concerning the Good Shepherd Centre in Bishopton, Renfrewshire.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "Strathclyde Police, along with the local authority and the Care Commission, is currently making inquiries in respect of the Good Shepherd Centre.

"Inquiries are at a very early stage and are ongoing to establish if any criminality has taken place."

The Good Shepherd Centre is an independent school run by a management committee in a building and grounds owned by the Catholic Church.

It has 65 pupils aged between 12 and 18, all of whom have either moderate learning difficulties or social, emotional and behavioural problems.

In a statement, Ronnie Hill, director of children's services at the Care Commission, said: "We received an anonymous complaint regarding the Good Shepherd in February.

"During our investigation, we became aware of other issues which were raised with police, Renfrewshire Council and other related agencies."

No-one was available for comment at the school.
