Scotland may submit its own Eurovision entry

KIZZY TAYLOR

Scotland has been given permission to break away from the UK and submit its own entry to the Eurovision song contest.

The competition's organisers, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), said there was nothing to prevent Scotland from entering on its own merit. It means that broadcasters BBC, ITV, STV and Border Television, which are all members of the EBU, could submit an entry.

Their ruling comes after intense lobbying from Alyn Smith, an SNP member of the European Parliament.

He said: "Other small countries have done it and I will be happy to help any of the broadcasting companies through the process."

Great news. We've some superb folk singers just now. Perhaps one of them could raise the tone - even half a tone would do :)

According to Matt T. Rosenberg @About.com; geography,
Scotland is not a country based on 8 accepted criteria.
Who will challenge him???

Definately time to abolish the European Parliament as it seems this Mr Smith character has clearly got nothing useful to do with his time.

Can you believe the SNP? All that good work done by Mr Salmond is slowly being undone by the fact he leads a party of loonies. You'd need a heart of stone not to laugh out loud...

Oh, Lord preserve us. If I cringe any harder I'm going to injure myself.

This is part of a nefarious plan to bankcrupt BBC Scotland, STV and what teeensy weeensy little bit of Scotland that Border covers. If we were to win this it would be a disaster.

According to those 8 criteria, neither are England, France or Germany.

Step forward Sydney Divine, your on.

Some people need to take a chill on this forum.

Scotland has every right to national representation and thank God that is being recognised internationally at least. The Brit Nats will always be dinosaurs.

What about getting the Jesus & Mary Chain to do it? That would be an interesting combination?

Have the Brits not suffered enough./ The Lucky White heather club every Hogmanay, Lulu, those appaling wee sh**tes in the short tartan trews who inflicted Shang a Lang on us, Auld lang Syne and all!

But if you want to make ar**s of yourselves and go for the Ecosse, Null point moment, no-one S of the border will stop you. In fact if it bankrupts your 'national' entertainment budget (subsidised from S o the Border!!!) we may even vote for it.

simple minds, average white band, black sabbath, runrig, annie lennox. Lots of great bands to come out of scotland

And unlike the English entry, i am certain that the voters of Europe would not be biased against us because of their distatse for what the country did in the past. I am more than happy for a Scottish entry to go forward and fully expect it to get more votes than our Southern neighbours. Would even put money on it and you know how tight us Scots are!!!!!

And if we did win it, Auntie Beeb would have no option but to fund the venet in Scotland so we would at last se soemreturn for our fees.

LETS GO FOR IT, what have we got to lose

What a joke! Just shows exactly what the nats are about- dividing up our country. The EBU has given a lie to it being a competition based on countries, it seems it's based on TV stations

First those nasty £1 tolls have gone (to be replaced by traffic jams) and now the mighty Eurovision.

Wow, the SNP are really making a huge difference to our lives!

(Does anyone outside E Europe even watch the Eurovision anymore?)

It is clear that many of those writing on this site have no wish to see an entry from Scotland in the Eurovisionpresumably in English.

Well I would be pleased to see one in the Gaelic each year.

Tam from Dundee is correct. This would be a politically astute move by the SNP. It would signify to the rest of Europe that Scotland is going to break free. It would separate us from the anti UK stance of many EU countries and you might find that we make ourselves some very useful allies in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. people may scoff and think it is trite - but you would be surprised how Eurovision is valued in other EU countries - English speaking music dominates most fora and so Eurovision is an opportunity for national expression. We should stick up the Red Hot Chilli Pipers doing a number written for them by Runrig - a wee gaelic number would go down well with the new EU member states.
Let this be a step towards getting rid of the chips on the shoulders - stand tall instead of crawling Scotland. Let's go for it.
And all these people who mock - are probably the same folks who do the phone ins for X factor and then ring the Record to say "my vote didn't get counted" trying to vote for the Scot. Hypocricy....

Can’t say I am a great fan of some the hype of The Euro Song contest but it can be light hearted fun and it provides a wide audience for our country so perhaps some of the posters here should lighten up a bit. As a marketing opportunity for the Scottish brand it makes a lot of sense and gets us out from under the distasteful, discredited and worthless British shroud-variety which is rapidly disappearing from the consciousness of most intelligent Scots. Also this would logically lead to entries from Wales and England (Morris Singers anyone?) and why not..these are genuine cultural and meaningful entities and identities just like Scotland!
