For these members of staff at Alea, Glasgow's newest and Scotland's biggest casino, opening night is literally on the cards.

LCI, the UK division of the giant American gaming corporation, has invested £25m in the 60,000 sq ft gambling and entertainment venue in the city's Springfield Quay, on the south bank of the Clyde, which opens its doors tonight.

The unusual name came from the Latin "Iacta alea est", the phrase Caesar coined when he crossed the Rubicon. It means "the die is cast".

Though it's not the supercasino that Glasgow tried for and failed to win, the new casino is far bigger than anything seen in Scotland.

Four out of five of the venue's 180 new employees are from Glasgow.
