A father today spoke of his grief after his beloved daughter died in Pakistan.

Sobia Wali, 22, from Glasgow, died in Lahore on January 24 after travelling to Pakistan on January 15.

Detectives have launched an investigation into the death of the British woman, police said.

Her grieving father Mohammad Wali said: "I loved that girl. I've become useless now. I sit like a dead body now. I used to have two daughters, now just one."

The young woman reportedly travelled to Pakistan with her mother and brothers to see relatives.

Shortly before the trip, the 22-year-old had married 24-year-old Usman Gulzar secretly, according to the newspaper.

Her father said that he would not necessarily have rejected Mr Gulzar as a suitor.

He told the Daily Record: "I would have had to think about it, wouldn't say yes immediately, wouldn't even do that with relatives."

The tabloid newspaper reported that the 22-year-old died following a botched abortion.

According to reports, she was four months pregnant when she died.

Strathclyde Police said that an investigation is ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the young woman's death.

Mohammad Sarwar, MP for Glasgow Central, said: "It is very sad to hear of the death of Sobia Wali.

"I have been fully updated regarding the police inquiry into the circumstances and I am encouraged that the local community have assisted them fully.

"This is a difficult time for friends, family and the community and I know we will support one another during this time of sadness."

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said that officials would leave the investigation to the police.

He said: "We normally extend consular assistance to the family if they need assistance but it is a police investigation.

"We would be kept informed."
