Call for inquiry into daughter’s death
A mother yesterday demanded a fatal accident inquiry in to the death of her daughter on a Scottish beach two years ago.
Guje Borgesson, who claims her daughter Annie was murdered despite a police investigation which concluded she took her own life, was speaking after travelling from her home in Sweden to the stretch of Ayrshire coast where the 30-year-old's body was discovered washed up in December 2005.
Annie was due to catch a Ryanair flight home to Gothenburg after a six-month placement working at the Scottish Whisky Heritage Centre in Edinburgh when she died.
A police investigation at the time concluded Annie committed suicide and there was never a criminal investigation.
Mrs Borgesson accepts the post-mortem examination finding which said Annie died from drowning, but has never reconciled herself with Annie having killed herself. Her family is certain Annie was murdered.
Bruises on her body and unidentified female DNA on her hands have fuelled the reluctance of Mrs Borgesson to settle for the theory that Annie killed herself.
Mrs Borgesson's two week-trip to Scotland - accompanied by Annie's best friend, Maria Jonsson, 40, - is being driven by their campaign for a fatal accident inquiry. Later this week Mrs Borgesson will call on the Scottish Parliament for changes to the way sudden deaths are investigated.
Last night a memorial service was held at the beach at Prestwick, where candles burned not just for Annie, but for many others who have questions surrounding the deaths of their loved ones.
"I feel Annie close all the time," Mrs Borgesson, 54, said.
"There are bad times. From about October 26, the day Annie left for Scotland, to her birthday, on February 7, it can get very dark for me."
Mrs Borgesson has become involved with campaign and support group Mojo, which works in the interests of victims of miscarriages of justice.
Ms Jonsson said: "The first time we spoke to Mojo it was like an embrace. Now we have high hopes we can get the answers we want."
The two Swedish women have turned part detective and have two fresh leads generated from their own website dedicated to Annie.
A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: "The death of Annie Borgesson was thoroughly investigated by Strathclyde Police and procurator-fiscal.
"The Crown Office was completely satisfied there were no suspicious circumstances.
"Miss Borgesson's mother has sat down with both the procurator-fiscal and the Crown Office and had all this explained to her."
A Crown Office spokeswoman last night said there were no plans for a fatal accident inquiry in to Annie's death.

Strathclyde police have a long and disgraceful history of not properly invesigationg murder eg prendegast saying Drew Ramsay was not necessarilly murdered ( he is asking us to beleive he was so pleased at escaping his kidnappers he went to Largs, rowed out to Little Cumbrae and drowned himself), took years to open murder enquiry into Annie Davies, not looking for anyone in connection with Marion Ross- follow the evidence-Strathclyde Police not care about murdered women.
As for the crown office-they just don't care.

I'm sure the Crown Office wont be wanting an FAI just in case it reveals any incompetence or negligence on their part, as seems to be the case when it comes to their failure to investigate sudden deaths.
Bravo to the girls mother for pursuing this case.I can understand her grief and how she must be facing the arrogance of the Crown Office when it comes to trying to get decent consistent explanations on what happened to her daughter.
Its a pity the Crown Office can still seemingly rely on unquestionable support from the Government in it's operation .. I thought all that was going to change after May, particularly since one of those now in Government once described to a constituent, the Crown Office as "the most corrupt institution in Scotland" ...

Open letter of Annie's Mum, Guje Borgesson, addressed to INJUSTICE SCOTLAND, sent FEBR. 26 2007
Dear Madams, Sirs,
My name is Guje Borgesson. Living in Sweden, I do not know where to turn and I am now writing to you to ask if you would possibly know where I can find people that want to help us.
What has happened is that on Dec. 4, 2005 my daughter Annie 30, was found dead in Scotland.
At the time she lived in Edinburgh, but was found dead on the shore in Prestwick, probably drowned , about 100 km from Edinburgh.
She was found at a walking distance from the airport in Prestwick from where she always travelled home to Sweden. Annie was found dressed, except from her jacket, that was right beside her, In her bag she had her Swedish passport and two library books to return to a Swedish library. She had also made an appointment with a hairdresser in Sweden on Dec 5. 2005
Although Annie's body, bag and her jacket had different weights and density they were all found on the sa,me spot. The ground is also very flat where she was found, the tides goes out 150 meters and you then would have to walk for several hundreds of meters to get into deep water. When the tide is in it's not more than one meter high where the wall is where Annie was found.
[italic][bold]On (her) one arm there were "square contused areas", but how do you get that at sea? These and other big bruising I got to see when Annie's body (was) returned to Sweden. One of them in the shape as from the edge of a hand on her right temple. This makes us believe Annie was transported to the shore, hit and drowned![/bold][/italic]
The days before she died she also called home and then it got obvious that she was under threat. Due to these and several other very strange circumstances as well as Annie's personality, we, her family and her friends are convinced that Annie was[bold] MURDERED[/bold] .
This is only [bold]part[/bold] of the open letter that Annie's Mum, Guje Borgesson wrote on the web addressed to INJUSTICE SCOTLAND.
To support Miscarriages of Justice. Org. http:// www. mojoscotland. com/index. htkl.
The reward for information leading to arrest of her murderer is Annie's Harley Davidson motorbike or the value of it in cash.
With deepest respect; may Annie Borgesson rest in piece.

Sandra Dick of the Scotsman wrote about Annie's funeral that was held many months after her death in a 15th-century-old church in Sweden.
[italic][bold]The flowers on the white coffin were Saltire blue and white with a single thistle on the lid, another reminder of the country Annie fell in love with. (Scotland) [/bold][/italic]
Annie's mother is concerned enough to think of other women whose murderer are still at large.

About Annie's golden locks.
According to The Crown Office Annie's waist-long hair was cut while preparing the body for transfer.
Pathologist Dr Alan J. Cronie said that hair gets matted and dirty in drowning cases and funeral staff present the body as best as they can for the family.
Guje Börjesson, Annie's mum's reaction was that she had considered to buy a wig for her daughter, because she knew that her daughter would not have wanted to be left like that.
It was never cut off before in her life.

As the following letter is already in the public domain, i thought it would be worth posting here...
[bold]"One mother's plea to another mother"[/bold] - who, apparently, couldn't care less and is showing the world the kind of woman she really is.
Most cruel and heartless the whole thing in my view. It is clear that Annie didn't take her own life and that foul play has occurred in this case. But because the Scottish police and Scottish Crown Office are loathed to admit they botched the rushed initial "investigation" into this Swedish girl's untimely death from the outset, they remain intransigent in the extreme.
Perhaps Salmond and MacAskill will now do the decent and right thing, and grant this Swedish family the FATAL ACCIDENT INQUIRY they undoubtedly deserve, and reopen this case to give the family the answers they still seek; eventual "closure" (though there can never be closure in a case such as this); and some time to properly grieve for their loved one, and let her finally ... Rest In Peace.
My thoughts are with Guje and Maria as they continue in their quest to find out THE TRUTH about what really happened to Annie, now 2 YEARS AGO ... and get JUSTICE for Annie and themselves.
Guje's letter to Elish Angiolini, Scotland's obdurate (and heartless) Lord Advocate reads as follows:
Monday 29 October 2007
Dear Ms Angiolini,
[bold][italic]My daughter, Annie Borjesson (7 February 1975 – 4 December 2005)
A formal appeal for the release of all case file documents and CCTV footage currently being withheld from me by Scottish Crown Office re my daughter’s case[/italic] [/bold]
As you are aware, my daughter Annie Borjesson was found dead on Prestwick beach in Ayrshire, on the west coast of Scotland, on Sunday 4 December 2005. As the second anniversary of my beloved daughter’s premature and very suspicious death rapidly approaches, I am writing to you with this formal appeal for the release of all case file documents and other relevant evidence currently being withheld from me by your Scottish Crown Office re my daughter’s case.
Without that withheld evidence I will never be able to properly grieve for my child or have any peace of mind for the rest of my life, knowing, as only this mother does, that my child DID NOT take her own life (as has been cruelly and wrongly suggested by yourselves) nor was she involved in any tragic accident. My daughter most probably met her premature death as a result of foul play and I am not the only one to hold that firm belief.
[bold]This is what I am formally requesting from you once again:[/bold]
1. All case file documents (including the full witness list) and other relevant evidence from the Scottish Police Investigation into Annie’s death, currently being withheld from me in your possession.
2. The CCTV footage (currently being withheld from me in your possession) from Saturday 3 December 2005, in which Annie is seen at Prestwick Airport at 3.15pm and on Station Road at 4.05pm.
3. A recent Sunday Mail article ("Undertakers Hack Off Annie's Locks", 21 October 2007) states: [italic]But the Crown Office have revealed it was cut by funeral staff who did not want the family to see it matted in mud and debris from the sea …… The Crown Office said: "It was cut while preparing the body for transfer.”[/italic] I would also like to have all the documents in your possession in this regard.
In a letter to me from your Scottish Crown Office on 12 February this year, it was argued that these withheld files and the CCTV footage could not be released to my family as it was not in the public interest to do so. There is now a huge groundswell of public support and interest in Annie’s case here in her homeland of Sweden, her adopted home of Scotland, throughout the UK and several other countries worldwide.
Below this letter are hyperlinks to a recent Edinburgh Evening News article; to my daughter’s website (and others) and her Guestbook; and to the Shirley McKie Forum. I firmly believe that the comments and serious concerns therein adds even further weight to my contention that Annie’s very suspicious death is now a “matter of general public concern” and therefore now satisfies your “public interest test” for releasing all relevant files (and the CCTV footage) in relation to her death to my family, and for you to now initiate Fatal Accident Inquiry proceedings.
[bold]From one mother to another I make this formal appeal to you:[/bold]
Please fully co-operate with my family over these serious unresolved issues, as the second painful anniversary of my daughter’s very suspicious and premature death fast approaches in five weeks time.
Many thanks for your time, co-operation and help.
I look forward to hearing from you personally as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Guje Borgesson
(Annie’s devastated Mother)
