Glasgow favourite to land Commonwealth Games
Glasgow has emerged as the firm favourite to secure to 2014 Commonwealth Games after rivals Abuja were dealt a huge blow in the final report on the bids.
Glasgow City Council leader Steven Purcell vowed to "bring the prize home" after doubt was cast the Nigerians, adequacy as hosts.
In contrast, Glasgow received high praise in the Commonwealth Games Federation's official technical report.
The CGF's evaluation commission's verdict on Glasgow's candidature concluded: "Glasgow has demonstrated an understanding of the major requirements to stage the Commonwealth Games."
It added that, if all the pledges are fulfilled, Glasgow would deliver "to a standard which would continue to enhance the image and prestige of the Games".
A final decision on which city will stage the 2014 Games will be made at the CGF's general assembly in Colombo, Sri Lanka on November 9, however Nigerian hopes have been dealt a clear blow by the appraisal of Glasgow's bid.
Purcell said: "We are in the home straight. We know what we have to do and there will be no complacency. It is time to go forward and bring the prize home."
He explained: "This report backs up what we have been trying to say all along. Given the chance, Glasgow will host the best Games the Commonwealth has ever seen.
"I am delighted that the evaluation commission recognised that all the infrastructure is in place or committed and that the bid's finances are sound.
"They also recognised that our plans will leave behind a legacy for everyone in our city."
The CGF report states that the Glasgow proposals "are grounded in a thoughtful and practical approach" and "venue and legacy issues were appropriately addressed with obvious sensitivity to Glasgow's long-term needs".
Whereas the evaluation commission stressed that Glasgow had every relevant guarantee in place, the same did not apply in their summing up of Abuja's credentials.
The report into Abuja's bid states that "there are a number of areas which require further attention and development within the proposals put forward" and "any decision to award the Games to Abuja should be conditional on these matters being addressed".
Scotland's sports minister Stewart Maxwell welcomed the report and hopes its findings translate into a Glasgow victory.
Maxwell said: "I'm delighted that the evaluation commission report recognises how much hard work and enthusiasm has gone into preparing Scotland's Commonwealth Games bid.
"The report says that Glasgow has shown it has the ability to stage the 2014 Commonwealth Games to a standard which would continue to enhance the image and prestige of the Games.
"This is another hugely positive step which I hope will help Glasgow secure this once-in-a-lifetime event.
"With just two months to go until the members of the Commonwealth Games Federation gather for their summit in Colombo to choose the winner, I hope members will now be as convinced as we are that Glasgow is the perfect venue for the Games in 2014."
The reports on each city are broken down into 16 categories, including culture, security, accommodation, finance, politics and economics, and marketing.
Glasgow is praised almost across without exception, although the CGF have requested clarification on some issues, whereas questions are repeatedly raised about Abuja's proposals.
The report questions Abuja's ability to raise £80million through marketing, describing that aim as "a significant challenge and risk to the Games budget".
Questions marks are also placed beside issues such as technology, Abuja hotel accommodation and specifically guaranteed room rates for 2014, and the suitability of venues, many of which have not gained international federation approval.
Glasgow has international federation approval for each of its proposed venues.
Louise Martin, chair of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland, pledged to keep working on every last detail to ensure the Games come to Glasgow.
She said: "We will use every minute of every day we have left before the vote in Sri Lanka to continue to promote our Games. We will not take our foot off the gas."

ever get the feeling that all this praise for glasgows chances of hosting the games is going to end with a "BUT"
this smacks of kind words to lessen the blow when abuja gets awarded the games

Shame on you, Joe Strummer.
The idea that Glasgow Council will use the Games to build facilities which will benefit their works team, ra Sellik, is outrageous.
Almost as outrageous a suggestion as the Council selling the land adjacent to Sellik Park for a penny in the mid 90s, knocking down council houses in Kerrydale, Janefield and Dalriada Streets, rehousing the residents at taxpayer's expense to clear the area round the Meccanodome.........
......and then claiming that was all a happy coincidence that the planning committee that OK'd it had Sellik shareholders and season ticket holders on it.
Allegedly :-)

How sad! If we can't criticise the city for something they've done badly - lets criticise it for something they've done well!!
I've lived in Glasgow for 25 years and worked here for nearly 40. I could (and do) say a number of uncomplimentary things about the city - but "corrupt" , "institutionally inept" and "allegedly open to corruption"???.
Which particular zones of Space and Time do these people ( and others like them in previous Comments) inhabit?
Joe Strummer is from London, allegedly, - a great and vibrant city, but many parts of London have similar, (and worse) problems to Glasgow crime, drug abuse, etc- but the powers that be didnt sit wringing their hands in anguish at their critics - they went out and brought the Olympics there for the 3rd time in 2012 - cue the small minded and those of limited vision reaching for the keyboard and trotting out the "whats it going to cost? " what does it do for Scotland", " money should be spent on hospitals " knee jerk stuff!
Well say what you like, guys - I wont be reading it for a while (if ever) - I have a life to live away from the keyboard and I am proud to be living it in the City of Glasgow, Scotland, the City and Country which will host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
You are all invited to the Party of the Century, anyway, here in Glasgow and throughout Scotland during July and August 2014. Lots of food and drink will be available - and if you run out of food you can always eat your words!!

How outrageous of you to even suggest that the sectarian cesspit of anti-Protestant bhigots that is esconced in Bhigot Central in George Square will re-furbish Sellik Park, build state-of -the art new training facilities, erect new rail and road links to the stadium, all for free for their favourite works team from the East End. ?
You know fine well that this re-furbishment and brand new facilities, etc, all paid for by the taxpayer and with not a penny of cost to Sellik mind, are solely to bring the Commonwealth Games to Glasgow and not for Sellik's benefit. How dare you even suggest such a thing.?
Someone catch that pig gliding past my window....

I'm not in a position to comment on suppossed corruption within Glasgow City Council, but I do think Glasgow thinks it's something it's not.
I do firmly believe that there are a lot of social issues that the council should tackle before trying to host these games, and as usual it will be the people in most need of support who suffer because funds are diverted elsewhere.
My opinion is that Glasgow is too fond of believing it's own hype, it is not the second city of Britain, and certainly no longer the second city of the Empire (Commonwealth).
Quite why anyone would want to stage a sporting event in a city with the poorest health records in Europe is beyond me. The only participation your average Glaswegian will make is to watch it on a wide screen television whilst telling the participants "yer rubbish, ma dog could dae better" !

What is wrong with you people? Why do we need to negative about everything that this country achieves? It always has to boil down to what "fitba" team you support or what political affilliations you have. Why cant it just be about Glasgow achieving something for the people. The games will leave a legacy. It will create jobs and opportunity. It will create better facilities for the people of Glasgow . It will create better housing. It will create better transport infrastructure. It will bring tourists and put Glasgow on a world stage.
What are you doing for Glasgow? Lets not see a nonsense filled response please.

Did you mean 'you are lowly status is misplaced' or 'your lowly status is misplaced'? I assume the former by the sentence structure. You're not the brightest chap here, eh?
Still, I blame these non-denominational schools. Everyone should have the right to a catholic education - especially you!

Perhaps if the Games had been sought with all the city/people/country in mind they could have been great. As it is they are untouchable to decent people. If the council (in a parallel universe, obviously!) wanted to spend many millions on building new facilities, improving infrastructure and generally and gentrifying the area around Ibrox, there would be a riot.

With regard to your comments which you will agree require a response.
"The village does have two idiots".
So factually we know that you are one of them, but is the other your dad?
As to money finding its way to the Labour Party coffers that would be quite simple, the businessmen who get the contracts would make a donation.
We have all seen before that people who donate to the Labour Party get contracts remember the one regarding vaccines?
Leopards don't change their spots and neither does the corrupt crony ridden Labour Party.
Finally maybe you are still stupid enough to believe that Labour is about social justice too!

As for you, Laird, your buttlicking approval of this gobshite's ramblings does you no favours. Guardian of Human Rights, I don't think so.

You know nothing of Joe Strummer if you are unaware of his loathing for sectarianism, division and apartheid, be it via race or religion. If you truly admire the ex-Clash icon, join the movement against the institutionalised sectarian apartheid in our education system which only breeds religious bigotry and hatred in Scotland.

"Can I suggest that you go f*ck your mother." - quite a powerful argument that, you've certainly convinced me of whatever it is you are going on about.
Who or what is "asian et al"?
I don't know if Ms NcNeish is ugly or if Mr Mackie is "the homosexual" but if they are then clearly your argument is well made (remind me what it is again?).

Still, I guess it was maybe too much to expect a 'completely' intelligent debate without the usual guff about football teams and religious bigotry. I find it more worrying that the idea of any improvement to Glasgow as a city is linked to this drivel.
Can you keep your religious bigotry out ouf the debate please and find some back street pub to carry it on? It's where it belongs IMO, not in amongst serious debate.

How can religious bigotry be kept out of the debate when it is the sole driving force of those instigating this entire sham of a Commonwealth Games bid.? The bhigots at Bhigot Central in George Square will be the most surprised and shocked of anyone if Glasgow wins as that was not their intention. The scam was the pretence of building new facilities for their works team in the East End under the guise of a CG bid. Win or lose, the only winners would be the bhigot friends. If you don't understand that, this debate isn't for you.

I'm proud to live in Scotland's biggest and best city! Our greatest!
Most people don't comment on good news, so it is typical to see the types of utter garbage being spewed in some of the above posts. I'll bet these people are not from our great city though. Jealousy as always!
Glasgow will prevail. We will win the CG and everyone there will have the time of their lives! The rest of you backward clowns with your glasses half full can go hide in your parochial towers until the games are over. We'll not miss you :) Wahay!

Honestly, I think the notion of using the games to help push develoment of Commonwealth countries such as Nigeria is well intentioned.
But, I have to say, doesn't anyone read the African news?
Kidnappings are an everyday occurrence in Nigeria. Sharia (islamic) law has been imposed in many regions of Nigeria, leading to punishment amputations, persecutuion of religious minorities, Christians and homosexuals (currently 18 are waiting to see it they are definitely getting stoned to death!! - I'm not kidding.).
If I were an athlete, Nigeria would be the very last place I would want to go. Period.
Glasgow should be proud at getting this far, it is a wonderful achievement for Glasgow, and all of Scotland.
