Britain in top-secret work on new atomic warhead
Exclusive by IAN BRUCE, Defence CorrespondentSeptember 04 2007

Scientists are secretly working on the design of a revamped British nuclear warhead.

The new device, designated the High Surety Warhead is understood to be under development at the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston in Berkshire.

The top-secret project is being run in conjunction with US efforts to build a range of modernised "failsafe" nuclear firepower for its own submarine-launched Trident missiles.

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) claims the research is a clear and cynical breach of international disarmament and non-proliferation treaties.

News of the research has leaked out less than a year after a succession of UK ministers denied plans to upgrade or refurbish the Royal Navy's existing stockpile of warheads, believed to number about 160 weapons.

Des Browne, the Defence Secretary, said in a Commons reply quoted by Hansard on December 18, 2006, that no such changes were likely "in the next five years". He then added that "decisions on whether and how we may need to refurbish or replace the warhead stockpile are likely to be necessary in the next parliament".

Insiders say the new warhead is the UK version of the Reliable Replacement Warhead programme which started more than two years ago at the US military's California and New Mexico nuclear laboratories.

The aim is to produce warheads which contain fewer degradable components, giving them a longer shelf-life, and to make them so dependable that none would have to be detonated in an underground explosion that would contravene the worldwide test ban in place since 1998.

The UK is meanwhile in the process of investing almost £2.2bn in the Aldermaston site to equip it with a state-of-the-art Cray supercomputer codenamed Larch and a laser codenamed Orion to help model nuclear explosions in place of live testing. The supercomputer, bought with £20m of taxpayers' money, is so fast that the six billion inhabitants of the planet would have to make 7000 calculations each per second to keep pace with it.

A programme to hire scientists, physicists and engineers is also under way at the 750-acre site. Recent recruitment adverts included the post of "warhead electrical engineers".

John Ainslie, Scottish CND's co-ordinator, said yesterday: "Dr Strangelove is alive and well and working at Aldermaston. A lot of money and research is going into the design of the warheads, no matter what is said in parliament. Everything is geared towards making the weapons more reliable and more accurate. That contravenes every aim of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. It's impossible to be working towards the goal of nuclear disarmament while you're in the business of producing better ones for your own forces."

An MoD spokesman said: "No decisions on any replacement for Trident have yet been taken and there is no programme to build a successor warhead."

Jeez.... So now we know where all those green taxes are going because for absolute certain they ain't going on developing new clean energy technology.

Very clever wordmongering. We'll campaign against the new and improved "Reliable Replacement Warhead", and the apologists for Mr Browne, the Keeper of the Royal Fireworks or whatever he is, will come back with, "Oh - You'd prefer to keep the old Unreliable Warhead?"

Labourites are complaining about the cost of rebranding the Scottish Government.

Yet Labour is going to build a DR STRANGELOVE DEATHRAY

DOOMS DAY MACHINE. costing £90 SQUILLION.

I wonder how many hospitals and schools they coud build with that

Its a funny old world.

to answer some of those junk mails you get for penis enlargement:

There is no answer. We will be building a section and welding it to Europe's other parts to have the world's biggest aircraft-carrier. Do we have planes to load on it? This fantastic military boondoggle will be manifest in Gordon Brown's backyard of Rosyth.

The email said: now you europeecans can project your penis as far as the South China Sea ...

New Labour "NWO neo cons" like Brown,Blair,Darling,

Alexander,Miliband,R

eid,Clarke and Blunkett are infiltrators and have neither social principles or any interest in seeking equality in the UK or in Scotland.

Their NWO plans for fleecing Britain to pay for their warmongering, legal systems and surveillance society could remove at a stroke the massive disparity between the have and have not's.The main cause of so much unrest in areas of deprivation.

We could vastly reduce the billions spent on police, lawyers, judge

s,prisons and all the other hangers on in a legal system heavily reliant on the continued criminalizing of vast swathes of Scots in the breeding grounds of derelict council schemes.Schemes that are seldom visited by police unless a murder requires investigation.Anythi

ng less the residents can tolerate as our law enforcement are otherwise engaged.
The multi billion pound legal industry has NEVER been fully investigated into how it drains Britain's resources. There seems to be very deep pockets for the judicial and legal parasites that cost the UK more than almost any other part of its infrastructure.

Britain is slowly wakening to the fact that our lack of DEMOCRACY has created a corrupt political class that has little interest in ensuring we raise the quality of life for ALL British families, as the political and legal dynasties require CRIME to ensure their own existence.Far better to continue to create more are more wealth for their rich backers at election time and the rest on warmongering ,spy networks and the law catching more and more of us breaking mountains of new laws that are increasingly turning us all into criminals of one kind or another.

The main reason our prisons are overflowing with the excess's of governments that have destroyed the sanity that would create ,not a perfect world ,but one that lessens internal conflicts and creates an environment for ALL citizens to flourish.Instead of condemning those unfortunate to be born in the ghetto's created by selfish governments who know the likely chances of those ghetto's creating the underclass that are continually condemned in the media for all the ills in society. When it is the political and legal mobsters that are the cause and who have manufactured policy to ensure that inequality will forever be the downfall of Britains future prospects.

Billions on bombs ,billions on spy networks, billions on a legal infrastructure that is required when government policy creates the climate for increasing levels of crime not curing the serious underlying causes.

Lets us see now, the world is definitely flat, all aspirin is alike, and all hostel foreign powers are just developing perfume in those underground bunkers of theirs. Why would your government develop these things to protect you? Since they have stripped you of your right to protect yourself in your own house I guess they feel new Nukes will make you feel more protected than ever before. There is a dichotomy here I do not quite understand. Your government will spend (B)illions to protect you and not let you spend a (H)undred to protect yourself in your own home or on your own neighborhood street? People wake up. What is wrong with this picture? You are way more likely to be murdered in your own home or on the street in front of your house then be "Nuked" by a foreign power. I guess it goes back to the all inclusive feeling "the government will always protect me" from the bad guy's who have no guns and the hostel countries which which have no Nukes and my healthcare will always "be topnotch and free"!

Is the concept of a "reliable WMD" not a bit bizarre - on a par with the concept of lead-free bullets "because they're safer"....?

It is refreshing to read of a government department that is spending our money with good purpose.

Whether you like it or not, we have to stay ahead in nuclear science and technology, and Aldermaston is doing fine work.

As for most of the posters above, who apparently don't mind if our defences disappear through neglect, I admire their pacifism even though it is misplaced, erroneous and ineffective.

Va Gent and Bill

You have to realise that the SNP has, indeed, proven that the world is flat. Word-games is the new cloak of confusion that is being used to hide vacuity of political content. Scottish Government, anyone?

There is a very fine line between the shouting of one of the major Scottish ´political?´ groups and the bellowing of another, one so fine that I have yet to spot the difference.

Sadly, on reading much of what is written in the columns of this forum, as distinct from the pages of the journal itself, one inevitably finds ones mind turning to two words: lemmings; rabies.

The defence budget is always going to be one of the biggest of any government, due to the sheer cost of technology, manpower and research. When you look at worldwide development of nuclear technology, this £2.2bn is actually very cheap for what you're getting.

Scamp, nuclear energy and nuclear weapons will come from two different budgets, as they have different purposes. I have no doubt the UK Government is developing a new generation of green as well as nuclear energy. I prefer a combination of the two - I'm a firm believer in not putting all the eggs in one basket, and a wide range of energy resources will increase our energy security.

£3.2bn missing from the SNP budget is a much bigger hole due to the relative size of budget, and I'm still waiting for a coherent answer as to why this hole is there.

This is NOTHING to do with pacifism and everything to do with common sense and decency .

Germany LOST the last war ,ask German pensioners how Germany treats them.Ask British pensioners how they are treated and ask them would they prefer billions of pounds being spent on weapons that proliferate conflict and against international treaties which Germany do not have?
We dont think many pensioners would think it acceptable to further erode their living standards for more new and advanced nuclear armaments.Dont the existing ones do enough damage already?
Or they forgot to tell us the last time they spent billions on them that they had a VERY short shelf life.

Maybe if this government are so anxious to spend they could raise all the money for nucelar weapons by taxing the rich and leave them with exactly the same amount of money as a pensioner has to survive on?

We dont think that would go down to well with the self appointed ESTABLISHMENT who virtually control the major parties policies at the utter expense of us lesser mortals.
Britain is utterly corrupt at the TOP due to a small self appointed elite deciding behind the secretive doors of their lodges which direction the political system takes and NOTHING to do with voting in their hand picked NWO lackeys disguised as some form of democracy.

British Prime Ministers have used this old dodge time and again to restrain the working classes using defence budgets as some sort of ploy to undermine working conditions while giving that money via the back door to their rich supporters.

Who really is behind the weapons ,surveillance and computer systems companies that this government spend most of Britains assets on?
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out they are ALSO the one's controlling this government. The rich benefactors of massive contracts to provide this expensive advanced technology.
That is were you will find were the really corrupt operate.

So you wouldn't mind that technology being stationed somewhere in England instead of just down the road from Glasgow.

To an older person this news item brings a sense of Deja Vu . Back in the early fifties there was a tabloid headline at the time of the UK hydrogen bomb tests in the Pacific. Above a photo of the mushroom cloud, the headline shouted, "Britain is Great Again!" I cannot remember now whether that happened under Labour or Conservative government. Perhaps that did not make much difference.

No doubt chemical and biological warfare have not been forgotten either by our "defence" scientists.

our defences disappear through neglect

They have.

When you need real workaday seamen to man minesweepers (real ones not the tupperware navy) or operate quitely though radars, nets and air / satellite survailance; when there was a geniune British Government they called on us: professional fishermen. And we respond. Westminster has already wiped out english seaman, then they went for scottish skipper-owners with malicious intent. For the current labour-tory-libdem mismatch are totally in the pay of multi-national global conglomerates. They're are british or english as my arse. And they hate local owned independent operators whether they be fishing co-operatives, farmers, or local engineering shops.

Now you gloat that you've stolen my tax money to flash your nuclear stick at the people's republic of China. Pervert! Don't come knocking at my door.

How come everyone believes everything they read. There is no indication this information is accurate or based on any fact. maybe if instead of believing things straight off and spending a little bit more time questioning them the general publics opinions would be taken a little more seriously.

I suggest you think about where this information has come from and then act otherwise nothing will ever be achievable.
