Sports minister urges SRU and Edinburgh to resolve dispute

Scottish sports minister Stewart Maxwell today urged the Scottish Rugby Union and Edinburgh to resolve their escalating financial dispute.

The long-standing row took another dramatic twist this morning when the SRU ordered Edinburgh to leave Murrayfield and repay £1.4m in advance funding by the end of tomorrow's working day.

Bob Carruthers, Edinburgh's owner, had vowed to take the governing body to court over an alleged shortfall in funding of around £250,000 after the SRU rejected his plea for mediation.

Maxwell has directly pleaded with both sides to resolve the issue but his efforts appear to have been in vain.

He told PA Sport: "I think most people would be disappointed by the fact that this dispute is ongoing but clearly it's a private matter, a contractual dispute between the SRU and Edinburgh.

"But clearly they have to resolve that matter and move forward in the best interests of the sport.

"I am very keen to see that rugby grows and develops in Scotland and is a widely participated-in sport and that we see our national team do well on the international stage.

"So I don't think it's helpful that we have got this dispute but it's a private matter for them. I am just keen they resolve it sooner rather than later."

The SNP MSP was reported to have intervened last week to bring both sides together.

But he said: "Just for clarification, I didn't try to get them to meet.

"I spoke to them both to say that we wanted them to resolve the matter as soon as possible so that we had the best interests of rugby at the forefront of everybody's mind.

There is little chance of the situation being resolved amicably after the SRU's latest move, which they claim was prompted by Edinburgh's termination of their operating agreement.

An SRU statement read: "Consequently Edinburgh Rugby no longer have any rights to play or train at Murrayfield and Scottish Rugby has asked when they plan to vacate the stadium.

"Scottish Rugby now requires immediate repayment of a proportion of the funding the governing body has advanced Edinburgh Rugby since July 2006.

"The deadline for this repayment, which amounts to almost £1.4million, is close of business on Friday August 3 2007.

"Despite further efforts being made by Scottish Rugby this week to achieve an acceptable outcome to the dispute in the best interests of the sport, Scottish Rugby now confirms that, regrettably, these actions have had to be taken."

The SRU are the worst governing sports body in the history of rugby and sport. You cannot play for Scotland unless your dad knows the right people or you play for the right team.

They set up the Borders team in the borders, where there was never going to be a big enough fan base to support it. Glasgow was receiving large numbers of spectators so the SRU moved several star players to Edinburgh and subsequently saw no rise in numbers at Edinburgh but a decrease in Glasgow. They opened the Borders due to a history of good players coming from there when they should have opened 2 Glasgow clubs as there is (sorry, was)
huge interest in the sport and more than half of Scotland's population in the Glasgow and West area to support the ventures.

They are constantly trying to make Edinburgh the home of rugby and ignoring that there is a bigger fan base, there are more clubs and more players in the Glasgow and West area Edinburgh only has 400,000 people and the SRU have always tried to force it as the home of rugby, which it's not. They have tried to force it as the home of rugby much to the detriment of Glasgow rugby and rugby in the South West yet both have survived, have large club fan bases and good teams. The Borders should not have had a professional team, that was daft. There's a big market in Glasgow and the West, it's time the SRU and others took off their blinkers and looked at possibilities in the market they love to shun. They aren't running the SRU like a business as it should be (what business would raise prices to 50 60 pounds with falling spectator numbers), they are running it like an old boys club.

The sooner the SRU completely changes its ways
the better. They should act more like the SFA or get advice from the English, Irish, Welsh, Ozzie, French, New Zealand and even Argentinian governing bodies. The SRU have shown that they are incapable of running the professional sport here in Scotland, they've had a lot of time but they are still suffering from "old chap" mentality. It's the reason why we have to bring in people with Scottish grannies who can't even get a game for their home nation, we are losing a lot of home grown talent as people don't see rugby as a viable income opportunity with the way these people are running it.

SRU = CHANGE YOUR WAYS, OR GO!

PS Most fans have been complaining about the SRU since the early 90s, Edinburgh rugby may not be right but it has brought to light how involved the SRU are in professional rugby and how inept they are at running the sport... which isn't a new thing, they have been inept since I can remember.

Hey, what about the North & Midlands. No team, complete loss of a hard won and proud identity and a barren wasteland to professional rugby. The SRU have made a shambles of the whole professional era.

Edinburgh are just the latest victim of the SRU's cash cutting mandate. First our Borders boys got the boot to balance the books. Now they can't afford Edinburgh so there stranglish the life out of them. Next year its Glasgow for the chop and finally with nothing to pay for the SRU will start of operate at a profit.

If you can't afford Pro-Rugby in Scotland, then don't bring in the Businessmen. Bob Carruthers and his consortium are going to take McKie and his well meaning amatuers to the cleaners.
