Nine demonstrators were arrested during a protest by school teachers at the Faslane nuclear base on the Clyde today.

Police said six women and three men were detained in the peaceful demonstration at Faslane Naval Base, home to the fleet of Trident nuclear submarines, Strathclyde Police said.

Six of those arrested blocked main entrances to the base, and three were supporters.

Chris Bluemel, a music teacher, speaking before he was arrested, said: "It is estimated that a replacement for the Trident nuclear weapons system would cost £76 billion over its lifetime.

"Yet the UN estimates that just £8 billion would be enough to provide universal primary education.

"As a teacher, I strongly believe that the latter would be rather more likely to increase our security."

The teachers' demonstration was the latest protest in Faslane 365, a year-long blockade of the naval base near Helensburgh.

They joined more than 160 other groups who have organised blockades of the base since October last year.

These include health professionals, lawyers and academics.

The number of arrests in the campaign now stands at 919.
