A historic church, home to some of Scotland's most ancient Christian sculptures, is set to close its doors in the autumn following a decision by Church of Scotland.

The congregation of Govan Old Parish Church will amalgamate with Govan New Church as part of a move by the Kirk to "rationalise its properties".

Former minister of the church, the Rev Tom Davidson, is reported to have called the decision "unforgivable", saying the church was "possibly the most significant church in Glasgow, including the Cathedral."

Built in 1888, the church stands on a sixth-century religious site and holds 31 pre-Christian and Christian sculptured stones. The Church of Scotland defended its position, saying many of its churches are expensive to maintain and not fit for their congregations.
