Women with high levels of testosterone are more likely to be attracted to masculine-looking men like Russell Crowe and Daniel Craig than more feminine-featured heart throbs like Orlando Bloom.

Men with raised levels of the same hormone are more attracted to feminine looking faces, like those of actress Natalie Portman, according to the findings of Aberdeen University's Face Research Laboratory.

Researchers Ben Jones, Lisa DeBruine and Lisa Welling asked male and female volunteers to complete short face-preference tests in which they were shown pairs of masculine and feminine faces and asked to choose which were more attractive. Volunteers took four test sessions each a week apart. They were also asked to provided a saliva sample which was used to measure testosterone levels.

Dr Jones, a psychology lecturer, said: "When men's testosterone levels were high, they were more attracted to feminine women. When women's testosterone levels were high, they were more attracted to masculine men."
