Iranian leader marks Israeli anniversary with menace
ALI AKBAR DAREINI
TEHRAN
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said yesterday that Israel was dying and that its 60th anniversary celebrations were an attempt to prevent its "annihilation".
The Iranian president's comments came as George W Bush visited Israel as the main speaker for the celebrations. Israeli President Shimon Peres has brought together world leaders past and present in Jerusalem for the occasion.
"The Zionist Israeli regime is dying," Ahmadinejad said in northern Iran. "The criminals assume that by holding celebrations they can save the sinister Zionist regime from death and annihilation."
He used an Arabic word, ismihlal, that can mean destruction, death and collapse.
Iran does not recognise Israel and Ahmadinejad has repeatedly called for Israel's destruction. The threatening exchanges between the nations have intensified since 2005, when Ahmadinejad said Israel would one day be "wiped off the map". The Iranian leader has also alleged the Holocaust was a myth.
"Nations of the region hate this criminal fabricated regime Israel and will uproot this fabricated regime if the smallest and shortest opportunity is given to them," Ahmadinejad said in his address, which was broadcast on state television.
Israel considers Iran a threat because of its nuclear programme and its arsenal of long-range missiles, which can be fitted with nuclear warheads and are capable of striking the Jewish state.
Israel and the US accuse Iran of using its nuclear programme as a cover to build atomic weapons. Iran claims its nuclear programme is geared only towards generating electricity, not bombs.
Peres has said he ruled out a military strike to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, but Israel would not act alone against Tehran's nuclear programme.
For its part, Israel is believed to have a large stockpile of nuclear weapons, but follows a policy it calls "nuclear ambiguity" and has never acknowledged or denied having a nuclear arms programme.
Iranian officials have warned Iran would destroy Israel's Dimona nuclear reactor if the Jewish state attacked Iranian nuclear facilities.
In Australia yesterday, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said he was mulling whether to launch a case in the International Court of Justice against Ahmadinejad for inciting violence against Israel.
"The Iranian president's repeated extraordinary statements, which are anti-Semitic and expressing a determination to eliminate the modern state of Israel from the map, are appalling by any standards of current international relations," Rudd said.
He added the Iranian comments were "dangerous stuff" in the context of international relations. "It's not just hyperbole from the bully pulpit of Tehran, it's the roll-on effect across the Islamic world, particularly those who listen to Iran for their guidance," he said.
Bush began his celebratory visit in Jerusalem, where he will make a new push for peace in the Middle East.
"We consider the Holy Land a very special place, and we consider the Israeli people our close friends," Bush said.
The president flew in for events marking the 60th anniversary of Israel's birth in the wake of the Holocaust.
"Our two nations both faced great challenges when they were founded," he said, "and our two nations have both relied on the same principles to help us succeed. We built strong democracies to protect the freedoms given to us by an almighty God and we built an enduring alliance to confront terrorists and tyrants."
Bush, who last visited Israel in January, was last night due to speak at a conference celebrating the anniversary.
Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and other Jewish Nobel laureates, including writer and Holocaust survivor Eli Wiesel, were among the guests.
The Palestinians call the anniversary of Israel's establishment the nakba, or catastrophe, as it resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
Israel closed the West Bank and Gaza Strip for Bush's visit, preventing Palestinians
from entering the country.-AP

The menace comes from the racist Israeli state which engages in crimes against humanity with the active support of America and Britain. Given that, its future can hardly be said to be secure.

Israel will survive. However until it settles with its neighbours including its displaced citizens, stops its policy of ethnic cleansing, atones for its crimes and brings its war criminals to justice it will continue to live in a state of war.

As has been frequently pointed out, Ahmadinejad did not say Israel would one day be "wiped off the map". No such idiom exists in Persian. It was a mistranslation initiated by Iran's own official news agency.
According to Juan Cole of Michigan University, Ahmadinejad's statement should be translated as: "The Imam said that this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time".
When Iran realised how the statement was being interpreted, it stressed that the threat was aimed at the regime rather than the land or people of Israel.

Stephen Murray. Unless Israel changes direction, stops it's theft of Palestinian land, along with it's abuse and oppression and aggression towards it's neighbours I wouldn't put anyone money on it. Israel's future lies not in the hands of the US or Europe but in it's own action and behaviour in the Middle East.
Israel may well be the strongest military power in the Middle East but without American support how long can that continue. They know full well that power in the Middle East is shifting and that Iran now pulls more weight in the region than America. Israel fears Iran, with or without nuclear weapons as it's a wealthy country, with an educated population and a growing industrial base. Interestingly when Olmert told the Iranian Jews to leave and go to Israel, they turned him down flat, and said they were Iranians first, Jews second and were proud of the Iranian heritage.
Israel's only hope now is a one state solution for both Israelis and the Palestinians. A two state solution is no longer viable.

There is no regime in Israel. Only a democracy elected by Christian, Jew and Muslim citizens alike. A unitary state would lead to the elimination of the Jews; to suggest it is clearly discriminatory against the Jews, hence racist. Iran is a totalitarian Islamist dictatorship to support its views indicates support for its political tendency i.e. a form of nazi-type dictatorship. To call for the end of a fellow member of the UN is tantamount to a declaration of war, and should be seen and acknowledged as such, i.e. support of warmongers. In sum the previous posters support a nazi-type dictatorship hell bent on a war of ethnic cleansing against the Jews. It seems little has changed since 1945, at least in the comments columns of the Herald anyway.

Israel distinguishes between citizenship rights, such as the right to vote, which is available to non-Jewish citizens of the state, and nationality rights, which are reserved for Jews. This is not a feature of democracy as we know it.
Several laws have been enacted in Israel whose intention is clearly to maintain Jewish numerical superiority and to reinforce the Jewish character of the state, all of which belie the claim that Israel is a democracy. Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, has identified more than 20 laws in Israel that discriminate against Palestinian citizens of Israel by working the Jewish character of the state into the text of the law. Israel defines “public good” in ethno-religious terms; lands expropriated from Palestinians for the “public good” benefit Jewish citizens only. The 20 percent of the population that is Muslim and Christian are regarded as a demographic threat. Obsession over the ethnic and religious composition of a country is also not a typical characteristic of democratic societies.

Thanks for repeating my post. And thanks for not addressing the real issue which is why would anyone support the nazi-type Iranian regime's goals ahead of a democracy like Israel. Israel has been at war with its neighbours for 60 years. When Scotland was at war against the Nazis it suspended elections and incarcerated all non Scots/Brits that belonged to those countries it was at war with. It did not give them the right to vote, free education and free health care. But carry on living in your hate-filled world and supporting Ahmadinejad's aims of a judenrein Middle East if you like. After all, like Israel, it's a free country, where we can say what we like right? Unlike anywhere else in the Middle East where you end up disappearing or worse for expressing your views. Oh, and what are the Scots Nats if not obsessed over the ethnic composition of the country? Pot, kettle, black anyone?

Oooooh, I'm really uncomfortable reading 'the Nazi argument' in comments about Israel.
There's a 'terrorism suppression' strategy that goes, "If you kill one of mine, I'll kill ten of yours - soldiers or not". Now which group - Nazis or Israelis - has practiced that most recently?

Sadly alexa it is the Israelis and their apologists who refuse to discuss the real problem, which is israel's continued occupation of the Palestinian territories and oppression. Israel will not be a democracy until all the People of Palestine are equal under the law.
George Bush might call Israel a peace loving democracy but history will judge Israel fair but harshly on it''s brutal oppression of those under it's occupation, the theft of their land and brutal murder and assassination of innocent civilians, both in peace and war.
Israel is not above other nations, nor is it above the (International) law and it will eventually be called to account. When that day comes the list of crimes it has committed against an oppressed and defenseless people will be made fully public for the whole world to see.
Already Israeli politicians and senior military officers are careful where they travel too, as they now know full well that many countries have International arrest warrants out for them for crimes against humanity.
Always remember: "Ut flatus venti, sic transit gloria mundi"
Translated into English: The glory(power) of the world passes like a fart! ( Gone before you smell it.)

God has given Israel back to the Jews. All the hatred and venom in the world won't change that. The prophecy is simple. Once they were put back they wouldn't be removable and anyone foolish enough to try would be destroyed.....Don't fancy being destroyed :-)
Funny thing is it's a proof of the existence of God as denying a 6000+ year old people group their traditional unbelieveably tiny piece of turf would have no place in a rational world........and all they want to do is raise fruit and flowers and sell of the extra.......On the other hand radical Islam is still in its turn-or-die phase......hmmmm

I don't apologise for anything concerning Israel there is no need to certainly not to those who support nazism like our friend in Florida. Why do you conveniently forget the mass murders of Jews by Arabs and Palestinians? Strange. A dead Jew counts for less in your world(s). Not in mine. Any crimes committed are dealt with by Israel's Supreme Court considered by all who know anything about the law and crimes as the pre-eminent, or at least equal, to any in the world. There is one law for Israel and another for Britain, USA, China, India, and Russia etc.
The idea that Israel has stolen anything is laughable the borders of Palestine were never defined in law and they are yet to be defined. Israel wants to withdraw but every time she does the Palestinians (so called) attack civilians with 1,000s of Iranian and Syrian rockets. Just because the media refuses to report them does not mean they do not exist. Still, Jew haters, you will believe anything that the nazi-lovers say and nothing that a civilised person does. Carry on living in your twisted reality as long as you can. You're welcome to it. I, frankly, have better things to do. Hey, Florida, looks like you, nazis, and the alligators have a lot in common. Still eating your young?

Present and Past…. Similarities.
This argument is 2,000 years old. Northern Ireland was only a few hundred years.
The instigation and perpetuation of the state of violence, (Not the State of ….) seems to be one sided.
How to end it? That’s the easiest thing to answer. Until both sides recognise their existence and each others presence and point of view, this will drag on indefinitely.
Each peace deal offered and each cease fire brokered is usually broken by one side and one side only, with either a suicide bomber or rocket attacks. The inbreeding of hatred is perpetuated by the same leaders and cleric, that entice young impressionable people to their deaths in the glory of religion and martyrdom, or to launch rockets from roofs or gardens of the houses of innocents.
We never see a Cleric or a religious leader with a bomb and detonator strapped to himself. Why? Because they are cowards, with the gift of oration and brainwashing.
That’s the basic facts.
Israel are quite justified in keeping the Palestinians at arms length.
Israel has been repeatedly and is constantly under attack from all sides by neighbour states who are plain and simply another religion. This is not about politics. It never has been and never will be. Its about religion. My Faith the true faith. All other faiths but my faith is to be crushed. Your faith is blasphemy!
Sound like the inquisition?
Arabic and Muslim culture is at the same development stage as Europe was after the medieval times, starting with the renaissance, 1450 to 1600 when the Papal dynasties in Rome were still burning supposed heretics. But that’s another story !!!
The not so nice neighbours of Israel, want to annihilate Israel. Who are their leaders, real leaders? They are all Clerics, or the puppets controlled from behind, by Clerics. This is a fact which I would doubt anyone posting here can argue against.
Israel is not a true democracy for all its residents. As many who lived there before the states creating in 1948 and were born there since, cannot be a full citizen and enjoy all the rights of being a citizen of a sovereign nation.
Look to what this article is about. This is about Irans response to GW Bush speech. What a biased and inflammatory speech it was for all of the Arab Nations. This speech was a classic example of two faced politics and double standards diplomacy.
Iran run by extremists Clerics, who are as rabid as Hitler was, make no mistake, Ahmadinajad is a mouth piece who wallows in his job because he is a mouth piece. A little bit like a Goebbels. Only difference is that instead of the Black Shirts then, they do actually have "Religious Police" in Iran… now.
There are distinct similarities between Germany of the 30's and Iran of 00's.
Both denying arming or having any military intent !!! While coveting their neighbours and planning to invade.

Can you imagine it, Israel wipes out the Middle East, America destroys the rest of the world and Israel survives nice and neat in the garden of eden called Palestine, overlooked by a munificent god who provides all!
Get real you fools, if you start a nuclear holocaust in the Middle East against Iran, you will also pay the ultimate price. The death and destruction will spread to Israel.
Many non Israeli Jews are already realising this fact that Israel is slowly becoming the greatest enemy of the Jews and will at some point in the future trigger an enormous backlash against Jews worldwide, especially in the US where people are slowly waking up to what Jewish Americans neocons are doing in the name of Israel and the Likud party and how much it is costing America. There is a lot of anger slowly building up in the US against the zionist and Jews and the wars they have already got America involved in and the ones they want to get America involved in. When America finally crashes they are going to be looking for a scapegoat and Israel is right in the line of fire.

What abject nonsense............
....
How come everytime someone criticises Israel and/or zionists people start accusing them of anti-semitism.
In sum the previous posters support a nazi-type dictatorship hell bent on a war of ethnic cleansing against the Jews
It's a rather nastily conceived attempt at going for the sympathy vote. Lets play the "Holocaust Card"
That'll show them................
.....
You want to be ashamed of yourself.

Very democratic indeed.

This is a blatant lie.
There were elections during the war years, the most famous election being when Atlee and the Labour party defeated Churchill BEFORE the end of the war.

More lies.
There was no free health care until after WW2 when the NHS was founded.
Education was free to all.
Don't forget the zionist terror groups( like the Stern Gang and Irgun) that murdered British soldiers.
People like yourself shame the memory of the victims of the holocaust.

Bill, I heartilly agree that it would be best for all concerned if there was to be peace in the Middle East but we are going to have to convince the Israelis, who hold the power that it is they who must make the concessions and learn to share the land with the Palestinian people.
One day it will happen but not as long as America and the west continues to give uncritical support to Israel and it's treatment of an occupied and oppressed people. As I have tried to point out to many Israelis, they have the right to share the land but not to claim it solely as their own based on ancients myths. Sadly as much as you try to point out the terrible crimes they are committing against a people they throw the history of the Shoah and Hitler into the argument as justification of how they behave. Israel is not immune to the vagaries of history, or it's consequences. The pendulum of power swings both ways.
Alexa, you use the term nazis very easy for someone who I feel does not understand it or it's origins:
Fascism is a government, faction, movement, or political philosophy that raises nationalism, and frequently race, above the individual and is characterized by a centralized autocratic state governed by a dictatorial head, stringent organization of the economy and society, and aggressive repression of opposition.[1] In addition to placing the interests of the individual as subordinate to that of the nation or race, fascism seeks to achieve a national rebirth by promoting cults of unity, energy and purity.
Fascists promote a type of national unity that is usually based on (but not limited to) ethnic, cultural, national, racial, and/or religious attributes. Various scholars attribute different characteristics to fascism, but the following elements are usually seen as its integral parts: patriotism, nationalism, statism, militarism, totalitarianism, anti-communism, economic planning (including corporatism and autarky), populism, collectivism, autocracy and anti-liberalism (i.e., opposition to political and economic liberalism)
As you will see if you read, Israel fulfils many of the above criteria, although it is much closer to Aparthied South Africa than to nazis Germany. It is a nation based on Religious purity and superiority that proclaims itself to be the chosen people, in a similar manner as the nazis(racial) and Boers(racial and religious).
[italic]"And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, ‘Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye;’ and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.”[/italic]

Yes thank you Dave, I/we've known about that for years. Hamas isn't the only ones doing hate speech, the zionists and their apologists are also doing it albeit much more subtly than Hamas. Israel also teaches it's children to hate and loathe Palestinians and Arabs as do Israeli parents. Mostly it's done in the same manner that white American and South Africans did with their black populations, never anything overt as that would be seen as cruel and illegal but never the less it is taught.
Israeli hate speech is also done in the western media, though it again is subtle in the extreme. Israeli casualties are lauded as innocent victims of "cowardly" suicide bombers. While the innocent Palestinians who are killed by the "brave" Israeli F16 bombers are dismissed as unfortunate collateral damage. If children then as willing participants of whatever act the Palestinians were supposed to be committing. The death rate between Palestinians and Israelis is 15:1. For every Israeli that dies, they kill 15 Palestinians, a high portion of them children. [bold]That is what I call Hatred![/bold]
Have a look at some of the hate speeches by prominent Israelis:
http://tiny.cc/Cdq08
Israel has been trying to get the rest of the world to hate the Palestinians for decades, in the hope it would justify the ethnic cleansing and make it easier for them.
Even if you succeed you still have the problem that you are going to have to live in a part of the world in which you were responsible for the death and destruction of a people. Israel might well be able to expunge it from their own official history and government documents but it will still be remembered by the rest of the world, especially in the Arab world.
Israel with support of the US will not always be in a position to impose it's will on it's neighbours, nor to defeat them in the manner it has in the past. Hasn't the survival of the Palestinians and the drubbing of the much vaunted IDF by a rag tag Hezbullah not taught you anything? The world no longer looks to America, even it's allies are becoming disillusioned with it and beginning to look elsewhere, or to themselves for their leadership and guidance.
If I was an Israeli leader I would seriously be looking to my neighbours and seeing what can be done to bring peace to the area, before those idiots in Tel Aviv and Washington take the Middle East and the rest of the world to the brink of destruction and beyond. Because that is where you are going with leaders who are driving blindly and drunk on power.
If you feel that this is a hate speech and anti-semetic please feel free to report it.

Dear McSomeone.... read what you've written and everywhere you have written Israeli, Jew or Zionist, transpose that for Palestinian, Muslim, Hammas, and see just how well the Jacket and trousers fit, then you will see the true picture and the mountain to climb, as both sides are exactly as bad as each other.
If I am not mistaken, with what you have written, you could easily be identified as a supporter of those that drove the jeep into Glasgow Airport Terminal!!!
Take off those rose tinted spectacles and have a look at the real situation.

If you feel that I'm a terrorist sympathiser shouldn't you as a good stooge report me? That's usually the most popular way of silencing critics, accuse them of being enemy sympathisers.
I am aware that Arabs and Muslims can and will be no better than others but we aren't discussing what they are doing but what Israel is doing. But like most apologists for Israel it always comes back to a distraction argument:
Look what the nazis did to us, don't look at what we are doing to the Palestinians!
Or
They cannot be trusted not to attack us because we are a small defenceless country that has to protect itself by use of extreme force.
Or
They have weapons with which to attack and kill us with, while we have nothing to defend against them, we are helpless in the face of such aggression.
Would you like to tell us about the Israeli Death Squads that stalk the streets of Palestinian towns and villages, in the West Bank and Gaza, instilling fear by killing and assassination? Or the pilotless drones that stalk the skies above Palestinians towns and villages with Hellfire missiles ready to attack at a moments notice. Or the Merkva Battle tanks that just drive through villages not caring for what damage they do to peoples homes. Or maybe tell us about the F16/18s that scream across Gaza at low level, day and night breaking the sound barrier, so they never get any rest or peace.
