Mugabe party seeks second round vote

ANGUS SHAW
THE government of Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has its own presidential election results showing a second round will be necessary, a cabinet minister said.

Deputy Information Minister Bright Matonga spoke a day after the opposition ruled out a run-off.

Reports say the official tally - still awaited more than a month after the vote - showed its candidate had beaten Mugabe, but not by enough to avoid a second round.

Matonga said Mugabe's party would take part in a run-off. "As far as I'm concerned, there is going to be a run-off," he said. "We have got our own results."

A day earlier, an official of the ruling Zanu-PF party said the March 29 election results gave opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai 47% of the vote with Mugabe on 43%.

Matonga said no-one had won the 50% plus one vote needed to avoid a run-off. Tsvangirai insists he won outright.

Mugabe, in power since independence in 1980, has been accused of brutality and increasing autocracy.

Advantage Mugabe!!! The MDC MUST take part in the run-off vote, otherwise they hand the election to Mugabe legally. If they participate, they face beatings and probably death for many of their supporters, and Mugabe will almost certainly fix this result so that he wins.

And still, neither Mbeki or Zuma of South Africa does anything. South Africa, you are a disgrace.
