French train sets new record

STRASBOURG

The TGV high-speed train began commercial service between Paris and Strasbourg yesterday, nearly halving travel time between the two cities to two hours 20 minutes and linking the TGV network with Germany.

The train made its maiden voyage with 360 passengers, arriving on time and continuing on to the German city of Stuttgart, said Anne Premel, spokeswoman for the Strasbourg municipality.

The line was inaugurated by Prime Minister Francois Fillon on Saturday.

"Strasbourg just over two hours from Paris, that was a dream. The dream is now fulfilled," he said. The previous fastest connection between the two cities took four hours.

Different branches of the line will also cut travel time from Paris to several other cities. The train to Frankfurt takes three hours 50 minutes and to Stuttgart three hours 40 minutes. A trip to the Swiss city of Zurich takes four hours 30 minutes.-AP

How long from Glasgow Central to Paris?

About 10 hours on a good day with a change at London.

The need to change is because the trains (which we paid for) which were supposed to run from Scotland to Paris were sold off to the Canadians, as the government wouldn't permit the service to begin.

It's only the Jocks after all - why would they want to go to Paris anyway?

Maybe some Scots would really like to go to Paris to maybe watch Scotland beating France again, at the Stade de France ?

I'd love to be able to take a fast single train to the continent. From city centre to city centre.

Surely it would be better for the environment too. Rather than having to fly all the time?

Oh, i was forgetting we have the railway system of a banana republic, only the prices don't match the appalling service.

I'd renationalise without compensation.
