First ScotRail wants to put up a wind turbine to power one of its stations.

The train operator has applied for planning permission to install the generator at Leuchars in Fife. The company said the 6kw turbine would supply all the electricity the station needs and could have power left for the national grid.

First ScotRail executives are now looking at other potential sites for wind turbines as part of its bid to reduce its carbon footprint.

Stewart Cahill, First ScotRail's environmental manager, said: "We have set ourselves tough targets on the environment and the wind turbine is yet another demonstration of our commitment to sustainability."

The £29,000 cost of the turbine will be met by Transport Scotland, the Scottish Government agency.

The turbine will be put on top of a 15-metre mast at the end of the station's platform.
