‘We’re not contributing to global warming, it’s economical’
ALAN MACDERMIDJuly 25 2007

LISA Duncan, 31, has been an unrepentant patio-heater enthusiast since she and her husband moved from a flat in Glasgow's Merchant City to a house with a garden in Scotstoun 18 months ago.

They have a table-top version which uses a gas cylinder shared with their barbecue, another garden feature which, like the patio, provides almost year-round use.

"Rain is the only thing that has put us off this year," she said.

"We like to have it on at night when it gets a bit chilly sitting out, especially when we have friends round. We even use it during the winter, in February.

"I don't think we are contributing significantly to global warming. It is quite economical, especially if you compare it to all these people sitting inside with their central heating on watching their huge plasma TVs.

"We are enjoying the art of conversation.

"We also have a multi-fuel burning stove and we offset our carbon footprint by not using the central heating.

"We have also finished insulating the loft and we manually recycle by taking all our bottles and newspapers to the Scotstoun recycling centre.

"We bought the gas cylinder last year and, despite being used both for the heater and barbecue, we had to replace it only recently - although because of the rain this year we haven't used them as much as we would like to."

What sanctimonious claptrap, of course you are contributing the rise in pollution, have you consider the amount of energy and road miles involved in getting your one little gas tank from the refinery to the store to your patio.
“We offset our carbon footprint by not using the central heating”
Really?

What selfish action by these idiots - heating outside space wastes energy and damages the environment for all of us. And not using the central heating is not offsetting anything - all it means is that you are not as bad as you possibly could be - big deal.

It's just a shame they didn't print your picture so we could all make little voodoo dolls and stick pins in you for using a patio heater!! Rather than recycling you should just burn all your rubbish in the garden and get the heat from that instead

I thought bearded, muesli eating, sandal-wearing, tree-huggers read The Guardian?

If we really want to make a real impact on the CO2 emissions of the country then we need to take less holidays and build more nuclear power stations. The occasional use of a patio heater will not have any effect on the net CO2 output of this country.

And I’m sorry to use the ‘it wisnae me it wis him’ excuse, but other countries (USA, China, India) really have to get their houses in order before we start banning the use bi-annual use of patio heaters in Scotland. I’m not saying don’t do your bit, just get the priorities sorted.

PS. I don’t own a patio heater, and my carbon footprint is size 9.

You could just wear a jacket and drink an extra glass of wine. That way you won't feel the cold and you can really save the planet!

Han Solo left a beltar carbon footprint. No one even noticed when it thawed out, so who cares. Buy ralgex if you want to stay warm.

How do you take less holidays?

How do you take less holidays?
Errr.... don't go on holiday? Don't jump on a plane every weekend? (like my bloody parents off to Spain again... their carbon footprint must be Ian Thorpe size... spending my inheritance and f***ing up my planet.

I'm sorry if your comment was a joke, I don't get it. I'm off to read The Sun. They have pictures to explain these things to me!

I always find my beer coat keeps me warm walking home at 3am, but I don't want some environmentalist telling me to put on a jumper and turn off the patio heater, that's rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

What a load of claptrap, "we offset our carbon footprint by not using the central heating." It just sounds like you are a miserable ba****d. (Any chance you can bring your gas bottle on Saturday.)

Ah, you meant fewer holidays. The Sun website is probably best for you.
