One of the north-east comedy trio Scotland the What? was last night named as the new rector of Aberdeen University.

Stephen Robertson will take up his post in July after current incumbent Robin Harper MSP steps down.

Mr Robertson, a graduate of the university, stood against Aberdeenshire councillor Martin Ford, who was removed as chairman of the council's infrastructure and services committee earlier this year after using his casting vote to reject Donald Trump's controversial plans for a £1bn golf resort near Aberdeen.

Mr Robertson polled 928 votes to Mr Ford's 852 in the voting.

He said: "Some people have greatness thrust upon them and today I had greatness thrust upon me."
