Youngsters at a Coulsdon nursery school got an inside view of the fire brigade on Wednesday, when a team from Purley Fire Station paid an educational visit.

Children between two and five years old at Hillcrest Montessori, the Mount, were thrilled when a fire engine and five firemen arrived for a talk and practical demonstration on May 30.

The Red Watch team came as part of school lessons on the emergency services, to give the children early experience of what the brigade do, and when to call 999.

Headteacher Sue Cramer said: "People often underestimate what a young child can absorb and giving them real experience is so beneficial."

Having used the hose and climbed aboard the engine, the children then spent the afternoon drawing pictures and writing about the morning visit.

She added: "It was a tremendous learning experience and really great fun. We are so grateful for the firemen's time, patience and understanding."
