A Norbury teenager has been short-listed for an award in the prestigious Royal Society of Arts Student Design Awards.

Malaika Dixon, 19, is one of a group of nine students from De Montford University inLeicester, who have been short-listed.

Malaika is in her second year at the university studying BA (Hons) Ceramics and Glass and designed an innovative salt and pepper pot that also has a compartment for sauces.

“The brief was to design something around Engishness,” Malaika said.

“I would now love to find a manufacturer.”

Malaika is hoping to win the Wedgewood Travel Bursary prize which is worth £5,000 and would give her an opportunity to find more ideas abroad.

The winner of her category will be announced next month.

Malaika said: “I want to carry on designing and hope to design for industry one day.”
