Croydons game with Hampton and Richmond at The Arena was called off due to a waterlogged pitch on Saturday.

The postponement raises the issue of the fixture pile up that most of our sides will have to face.

Croydon, for example, have played just 21 matches this season when they should have completed up to 26 by now.

While we currently have monthly awards for managers and goalkeepers, it may be time to start a groundsman of the month prize.

These lads are working flat out to try to get the surfaces playable and as we approach the half way stage in our league programme they could play a major part in their clubs fortunes this season.

Whytleafe manager Lee Richardson told me of his concerns over game called off due to the conditions.

It causes financial concerns and Lee pointed out that every home games postponed means revenue is lost.

Despite getting closer to a top three position we will need to be able to back this up with finances, he said.

In the Ryman Premier, bottom side Dulwich Hamlet lost 2-0 at home to Basingstoke on Saturday.

Some of their recent fight was missing and they rarely threatened the goal. Only Sheldon Brown brought the best out of the away keeper four minutes from half time but Dulwich were already 1-0 down at this point. The second half saw some improvement and Declan Perkins had a good effort saved at point blank range, but Basingstoke added a second goal 15 minutes from time.

In Division One, Whyteleafe ran out 2-1 winners over Walton and Hersham to lift them into sixth spot with games in hand.

Whyteleafe went into an early lead on five minutes when Paul McKay latched on to a poor back pass and fired home.

Walton equalised by Gary Elliott fired a winner for the home side from the spot.

In Division Three Croydon Athletic won 2-1 at bottom side Chalfont St Peter thanks to late goals from Jeff Wilkinson. This was an important result after Athletics 5-1 defeat at Cove in the FA Vase.
