POLICE are appealing for witnesses following two thefts from Bishop's Stortford shops on Thursday afternoon.

In the first incident, a man and a woman entered the Grapevine off-licence in South Road between 3pm and 4pm.

The man opened the unattended till and took £200 in cash. The thief then bought a newspaper before leaving the shop.

The couple are both black and aged between 20 to 30. The man was wearing a baseball cap and baseball jacket with a large letter B emblazoned on the back. His accomplice was wearing a knee-length dress.

Police officers are currently examining CCTV footage of the two, who were caught on the store video.

In the second incident, a couple of the same description walked into the Football Shop in South Street at about the same time.

The man asked if he could try on some trainers and while the assistant moved away from the till, took the key, which had been left underneath, and opened the tray.

He then took a quantity of cash before the two made their excuses and left the premises.

Any witnesses should ring PC Heath Monk at Bishop's Stortford police station on 01992 533108.
