It was disappointing to see yet another Labour councillor try to re-write history (Times Series, August 6).

This time Labour is suggesting that the Liberal Democrats (and for that matter the Conservatives) did not object to the increase in civilian flights into RAF Northolt over the last four years. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Just because the matter was not discussed in full council does not mean that the council has no view, as Councillor Mark Ingram should know.

Indeed, all parties expressed opposition to the increase in civilian flights and the council objected most strongly. The fact is Harrow was not even consulted before it took place.

Local residents were made aware through Focus newsletters issued by the Liberal Democrats in late 1994 of the MoD expansion plan. And various Focus newsletters since then have reported on the campaign.

any expansion in 1986 -- long before Mr Ingram was on the scene -- Liberal Democrats have fought any commercial expansion of the airport.

Up until now, Harrow Council has been united in opposing increased commercial airflights for RAF Northolt, so it was surprising that this new councillor and his Labour friends voted down a motion re-affirming Harrow's opposition.

Liberal Democrats, both locally and nationally, will fight any commercial expansion plans but let us not forget that Labour, with its massive majority in the Commons, a Labour council and two local Labour, MPs has the power to kill this dead, now.

It is worrying that a Labour controlled Commons committee recommends the opposite of what local residents want.
