Two Enfield medical centres have made it through to the final stages of a prestigious competition.

The Eagle House Surgery and the Riley House Surgery have been short-listed for the 1998 Doctor Awards.

Organised by the medical newspaper Doctor, the awards rank amongst the top accolades in the country.

The Eagle House Surgery in Hertford Road joins two other GP teams in the running for the GPFC Practice Development Award.

It was chosen because of its pioneering approach to planning, financing and re-developing the surgery premises.

Earlier this year the team took over a new premises which are 400 per cent larger than the previous building. With help from a project manager, a medical architect and grants from organisations such as the Tomlinson fund the building was converted into a state-of-the-art clinic.

Minor surgery can now be carried out at the building which opened in June and it also has an in-house pharmacy.

Childcare clinics and a consulting room for visiting specialists are also available along with space for community nurses and health visitors.

Dr Mohamed Fahmy Kaleel of the Riley House Surgery and his colleagues are finalists in the Merck Sharp and Dohme Respiratory Team Award.

The six GPs at the surgery in Riley Road have a special interest in asthma and respiratory cases.

They have helped to increase awareness amongst patients and carers through an open day as well as giving advice about problems.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in October.
