Croydon Harriers' athletes enjoyed a memorable weekend as both juniors and seniors ran into form at just the right time.

The senior men hit form to fend off the threat of relegation from the Southern League Division One on Saturday.

And the juniors were also out in force and flying the flag for Croydon in the Junior National Championships in Sheffield to retain the Ebbersham league title.

Needing to beat host club Hastings to ensure their survival in the Southern League, Croydon responded magnificently to win six of their A string events and place third in the match comfortably ahead of Hastings.

Teenager Mike Nesbeth led the way with a double win in the long jump (6.72m) and triple jump (13.40m) while Gary Bishop produced an excellent finish to win the 5,000m in a season's best time of 15mins 18.3secs and sprint sensation Jon Barbour won the 100m in 10.5secs.

Meanwhile the final meet of the season saw the U13s and U15s stars clinch their title with victory at Walton.

At the same time an 11-strong squad of outstanding young male and female athletes made a big impact at the AAA Junior Championships at Sheffield .

Star turn was undoubtedly 14-year-old middle distance phenomenon Amanuel Tschaye who, having already comfortably won his 1,500m heat, went on to dominate the final, winning the gold in a blistering 4.17.83secs.

England schools' pole vault silver medallist Cameron Johnston had to settle for silver again but he equalled his best of 4.30m. Fast-emerging sprint prospect Andre Fleming ran superbly in the U15s 200m and despite clocking a new PB just missed out on a bronze medal.

Kia Wnuk also just missed out on a bronze medal in the girls' U17 pole vault with a clearance of 2.80m.
