CHEERS rang out and the beer flowed as football fans celebrated England's entry into the World Cup.

It was a nail-biting afternoon in O'Neills pub in Paul's Row, High Wycombe, on Saturday, as England looked to be on the verge of losing to Greece.

But as David Beckham rocketed a free kick into the opposition net in the 93rd minute to level the scores, the crowd erupted into ecstasy.

With England's passage to Japan and South Korea next year secured, fans headed to the bar to enjoy the moment.

Lucy Dodds, 33, a property developer from Booker, said she was jumping for joy when Teddy Sheringham came on and screamed when he scored England's first goal.

She said: "It is a side that has a good chance of winning the international competition. From the start we just loved David Beckham, and it still took him to finish it off."

Richard Barber, 18, a student from Burrows Close, Hazlemere, said he couldn't believe it when Beckham's free kick blasted its way into the back of the net. But he said he was doubtful for quite a long time about whether England could clinch that all-important second goal.

He said: "It was superb. It was a bit scary for 93 minutes but we got the goal and that is all that matters."
