A YOUTH worker has stressed that the town's Northgate Youth and Community Centre will not be closing its doors to Duke of Edinburgh scheme youngsters.

Following a report in the Citizen last week, the open awards centre leader in Bishop's Stortford, Richard Hood, said that although the centre was receiving less council support as a result of budget cuts, it would remain open.

The centre's previous two full-time youth workers and leader posts had been moved to Hertford, leaving schools responsible for administring the scheme.

"The open award centre is still being run by Hertfordshire youth teams but there are no longer any full-time youth workers based in Bishop's Stortford," he said.

"Herts County Council no longer has a team dedicated solely to the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. I now have responsibility for the open awards centre and supervise five or six volunteers."

Youngsters are invited to join the Duke of Edinburgh scheme group, which meets every Tuesday night between 8pm and 10pm at the centre based in Northgate End.~
