An ambitious bid to give Croydon and South London a voice across the airwaves is being launched tomorrow night.

The South London Community Radio Group is campaigning for a licence for a new radio station to put south London on the map.

It is campaigning for a third and effective community-based tier of radio broadcasting which would give some of the most excluded members of society a voice and access to mass media.

The group holds its inaugural meeting at the Morden Library, Merton Civic Centre, near Morden Tube tomorrow night (Thursday, July 9) at 7.30pm and is urging the public to come along. Project manager Alan Fossey said: "We maintain that everyone - that includes even the most marginalised people in our society - has a right of access to the mass media and the South London Community Radio Group plans to provide the means to that access.

"South London has some very deprived areas as do other major cities and many people do not have access to the media." The new station would broadcast across Croydon, Sutton, Merton and Wandsworth, Lambeth and Southwark.

But before it can be set up it has to raise around £60,000 just to fund a studio and win a licence from the Radio Authority.

Mr Fossey admits the licensing process could be difficult as the station will remain community based and non commercial. Anyone interested in getting involved may call the South London Community Radio Group on 0181 401 1895 or attend tomorrow's meeting.
