Now England are out of the World Cup there is no excuse for not rounding off the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Festival with a fun-packed visit to Meadow Park on Saturday afternoon for Families Day.

Successful regular events at the two-week long fair have included the sun-blessed carnival parade, the half-marathon and fun run -- which boasted more finishers than every before -- a rain-drenched but popular open day at the fire and ambulance station and the star-studded Elstree Film evening.

Among the new events added by the imaginative organisers to the 42nd festival, go-karting at Meadow Park on carnival parade day and the French Boule "It's a Knockout" competition were both hits.

Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council, based at Fairway Hall in Brook Close, Borehamwood, run the show each year. In partnership with other organisations they strive to programme events that will appeal to people of all ages and interests in the town.

Events are planned that both encourage community togetherness and showcase the wide variety of activities going on in the area all year round. Officers at the town council emphasise that the festival can only succeed if it is supported by the community.

And Elstree and Borehamwood people should count themselves lucky that their festival has stood the test of time, when others have fallen by the wayside.

After all their hard work put in at the grass-roots by the town council, the community must express its gratitude by turning out in force on Saturday, come rain or shine.
