A project to bring a redundant school court yard to life finished last week after three years of hard work.

In a ceremony on Friday watched by young pupils, the Bishop of Hertfordshire, Bishop O'Brien, declared the new court yard at St Teresa's JMI School in Brook Road open.

Most of the £8,000 it cost to complete came from school funds, and various local agencies such as the Shenley Park Trust and Three Valleys Water gave a helping hand with advice and support.

Now children at the Borehamwood school have somewhere quiet to sit if they want to get away from the noise of the playground during breaks. It has a waterfall, a fountain, trees and shrubs and a place to sit.

"The area was just a very uninteresting space which had never been put to much use," said head Mike Nolan. "Now it is a tranquil area for children to go to. It is also used as a classroom for environmental science lessons and the children love it."
