Wimbledon's Robbie Earle is the pride of Jamaica after his fantastic goal in the World Cup on Sunday.

He rose high to plant a brilliant header into the Croatia net on the stroke of half-time in Lens. It levelled the scores at 1-1 but Croatia ran out winners with two second-half goals.

However, the goal represented a personal triumph for Earle - who missed most of the Dons' season with injury. He said: "It was a piece of history - Jamaica's first goal in the World Cup. I was very proud."

Earle's Dons team-mate Marcus Gayle, who didn't feature against the Croats, hopes to get his opportunity of World Cup fame when the Jamaicans face Argentina in the Parc des Princes, Paris, on Sunday.

l Wimbledon get an early chance to make amends for their most humiliating 90 minutes of last season at the start of the 1998-99 campaign. Spurs - 6-2 winners over the Dons at Selhurst Park on May 2 - return for the big kick off on Saturday, August 15. The Dons face a trip to Derby and a `home' game with Leeds on the following two Saturdays.
