Kingston's senior boys team successfully defended their trophy in the Surrey Schools Championships at Kingsmeadow.

Victories by Kingston College of Further Education students Sam Haughian in the 3,000 metres (8 min 47.4 sec), Darren Chin in the 100 metres (11.1 sec), Tiffin's Tom Solomon in the 800 metres (2 min 3.7 sec) and James Piper in the hammer (21.68 metres) laid the foundations for Kingston's triumph.

They scored 81 points, ahead of Central Surrey (71) and South Surrey (48).

Chin's time in the pouring rain was a noteworthy effort, only one-tenth of a second outside the championship record. He defied an injured ankle to compete, also helping Kingston to victory in the sprint relay.

Central Surrey's best win came in the long jump where Darren Thompson from Glyn ADT College, silver medallist in last year's English Schools Championships, leapt 6.89m.

James Hilston from Ewell Castle took the 200 metres in 22.2 sec. Last year, he took the senior boys 400 metres bronze medal at the English Schools Championships.

Kingston's only other winner in the boys' was Chris Bailey, who took the junior boys' high jump with 1.60m. Robert Paul, who competes for Epsom and Ewell Harriers, won the senior boys high jump for Sutton district with 1.90m, while Wimbledon-based Gareth Lewis, who also competed for Sutton, retained his senior boys' 400 metres hurdles title in 55.3 sec.
