SURBITON TENNIS.

The weather cleared in time for the Powder Byrne Tennis Tournament at the Surbiton Lawn Tennis Club to be completed last weekend as foreign players saw off a strong British field to win both singles competitions.

Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski played exhibition matches, but the presence of Britain's top two could not inspire their fellow countrymen and women.

The women's finals were completed with the sun beating down on Saturday, and the men's took place the following day.

In the women's tournament Amelia Cocheteux of France scooped first prize and the winner's share of $25,000, beating last year's winner Seda Noorlander from the Netherlands into second place.

Epsom's Lorna Woodroffe lost to Noorlander in the second round.

Another Brit to lose to an eventual finalist was Chris Wilkinson, beaten by Gianlucca Pozzi, of Italy, in the semi final. Pozzi went on to defeat Kevin Ullyett, of Russia, in the final and win his share of the $50,000 prize money.

In the men's doubles British pairing Miles Maclagan and Andrew Richardson reached the semi final. Eventual winners were Australian pairing Sandon Stolle and Peter Tramacchi.
