After a lengthy campaign that started with the winning of the Surrey Road Relay championships way back in September, the men's over 50 squad of Hercules Wimbledon saw the season out in style.

Competing over the military paths of Aldershot in blazing sunshine the team placed a highly respectable sixth in the National Road Relay Championships.

Team captain Alan Turner, stepping in at the last moment for the indisposed Marco Ciglia, set the team on its way with a time of 23m 35s for the 6km loop before handing over to former Surrey M50 cross country champion Vince Hancock - who improved the team's chances with his time of 21m 41s.

The solid trio of Martin Miller (22.05), Graham Bradbury (23.05) and Dennis Williams (21.53) saw the team hover just outside the top ten placings before former British marathon representative Steve Badgery - missing for most of the major championships this season - overtook a phalanx of runners as he clocked the team's fastest time of 20.44.

For the first time in Hercules' history the club was represented by an over 60s team as the trio of John Roberts, whose 22m 50s proved to be fourth fastest in the event, John Phelan and Phil McIlwain steered them to eighth position.
