FULHAM.

Ray Wilkins was sensationally sacked as Fulham manager yesterday just three days before Sunday's crunch play-off game against Grimsby.

The announcement comes less than seven months after the former England captain was drafted in to replace Mickey Adams.

In that time he has spent more than £7m strengthening the Cottagers' squad. Chief operating officer Kevin Keegan has taken over team affairs.

The club gave no reason for Wilkins' dismissal as the News went to press yesterday afternoon.

But it will be the timing of the decision that baffles most Fulham fans.

It was less than a week ago that Wilkins' side secured a place in the play-offs despite losing at home to already promoted Watford. From the kick-off the home side attacked and looked like they might overrun the visitors.

But as Watford settled down they began to exploit flaws in the Fulham long-ball game and in their defence.

In the 35th minute Gifton Noel-Williams tapped in for Watford. And after Peter Beardsley's stunning 20-yard equaliser 30 minutes later, Watford stepped up a gear and settled the game through Jason Lee.

On this performance, Fulham could well gain promotion. Over the season they have proved that they can beat the best.

After Wilkins answered questions about his side's chances of promotion. He talked confidently about the future and expressed faith in the team. Obviously the board did not share his optimism.
