Tim Garner, ranked No 8 in England and 26 in the world, scored a comprehensive victory over Chris Tomlinson to win the Wimbledon Cup men's open squash tournament at Wimbledon Squash & Badminton club.

Tomlinson, a former England Under 19 No 1, started well matching Garner stroke for stroke and point for point. But at 12-12 Garner, the top seed, pulled away to take the game 15-12.

The second and third games both went Garner's way as his experience, tighter shots and varied stroke told against the younger man. He took the second game 15-9 and the third 15-9.

Garner, who did not drop a game on his way to the title had beaten Bradley Ball in the semi-final. Tomlinson, a former Wimbledon player, had scored a great victory over Hadrian Stiff, the England No 15 and second seed in the event, in the semi final.

In the first ever Ladies Wimbledon Cup contest, Stephanie Brind, the England No 11 scored an exciting victory over Rebecca MaCree, the England No 8 by 9-7, 9-3, 9-10, 6-9, 9-7. Rebecca had come back from 2-0 down to take the match into a final game.
