Parents are calling for urgent action to stop drivers using the wrong side of the road near an Enfield school.

In a bid to beat early-morning traffic queues on Carterhatch Lane some drivers take their cars into the right-hand lane and overtake the lines of vehicles.

But parents with children at Carterhatch Lane Junior School say it is only a matter of time before it leads to a serious accident.

Yvonne Theodosiou saw a car narrowly miss her son Tony last week as he crossed the road to school. She reported the car'sregistration number to the police.

She said: "I sat and watched five cars drive on the wrong side of the road in 20 minutes.

"It has to be stopped unless someone is going to be killed. We need a zebra crossing and a lollipop lady."

The problems are caused by drivers overtaking other cars as a quick way of getting to the front of queues at the junction with Hertford Road.

When the right-hand lane is clear, they pull out and drive past the wrong side of a pedestrian island in the centre of the road outside the school.

Susan Banks has been the school's crossing warden for four years. She said: "The cars just pull out and drive on the wrong the side of the road.

"Other drivers see this and think they can get away with it as well.''

An Enfield Council spokeswoman said: "Residents should tell their ward councillors about any concerns.

"They can then be dealt with by the traffic and road safety sub-committee.

"Cases of illegal driving should be reported to the police.''
