WITH reference to the article entitled Stop all the speeding (News Shopper, February 13).
We applaud the Kelsey and Eden Park Action Group's call for traffic calming measures to improve road safety in Court Downs Road and Wickham Road following an accident involving a 12-year-old cyclist.
However, in calling for a speed table and traffic islands now, prospective Conservative candidate Rod Reed is simply hoping for a head start to his campaign for the local elections in May.
As a former Conservative councillor, he should have spoken to the current Kelsey Park ward member, Councillor Tickner, who is also the leader of Bromley Council.
He would then have learned Cllr Tickner is on record saying at recent meetings "there will be no more speed humps in Bromley; the motorist has suffered enough".
He should also know, to keep the council tax increase to 6.5 per cent in an election year, the Tories have made cuts of nearly £11m including a further cut of £50,000 from the budget which funds traffic islands.
Furthermore, the block capital budget for traffic calming schemes to improve road safety, already approved for this year, has also been frozen and proposals, like the one for Eden Park, deferred to next year.
This is why the council has not got the money for what Mr Reed wants.
