PEOPLE keep banging on about the directly-elected mayor but does anyone really care?
The candidates are chosen by party members, for whatever reason and then the public gets its say but if its anything like other elections the turn-out will be less than 20 percent.
This must show how little people care about politics and governance in this country, as they can't be bothered to exercise their rights.
And let's be honest it isn't really going to make much difference to residents whether there is a directly-elected mayor or not.
Residents will not get more power from this and he/she who has the power, the mayor, won't pay any more attention to us.
Obviously the main contenders are Labour, who have presided over Lewisham Borough for decades but they can't even sort out their candidate selection so what hope is there if their man wins.
It seems a lot of fuss and, no doubt, expense over nothing more than a governmental reform aimed at giving a lot of power to one person.
