FIREFIGHTERS have reminded people of the importance of having smoke alarms fitted at home.
Sub-officer Allister Woods, of Erith Fire Station, said: "We are trying to encourage people to buy, install and maintain smoke alarms."
And the station is leading by example they have an agreement with Age Concern Bexley to fit them free for some elderly residents.
Since last February, Age Concern has fitted 400 alarms for people with no other means of family support, under its Handy Persons' Service project.
Home support co-ordinator Anne Bygrave said: "Our volunteers are trained by the fire brigade to fit and test alarms."
The scheme provides help with odd jobs around the home too. Call 020 8300 0883 for more information.
