VOLUNTEERS are being sought to act as lay representatives for the North Essex Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust.

The role sees the lay representatives under the title of Mental Health Act managers liaise with patients and attend panel meetings for whose who believe they have been wrongly admitted to a secure psychiatric unit.

Sabdra Gillson, from the trust, said: "Anyone who is sectioned under the Mental Health Act has the right to appeal and lay representatives manage these hearings.

"These volunteers receive full training to enable them to make informed decisions. Most importantly, they have the power to uphold or dismiss the section."

Some 45 appeals a month are heard across the trust area, which includes Epping Forest, Harlow and east Hertfordshire.

The panel comprises three managers who will receive written evidence from a range of health and social care professionals. Travel and out of pocket expenses are paid.
