A rooftop garden play area has been opened at Barnet Hospital thanks to a tremendous fund-raising effort from the parents of a former patient.

The garden area, complete with sunken galleon and sand pit, has been built atop the hospital's Treasure Island ward after the Joely Bear Appeal raised the £70,000 funds needed. A clear safety fence has been put up to ensure there are no accidents as well as a clear view over north London.

Sue Laurent, a paediatric consultant, said: "We are extremely grateful to the Joely Bear Appeal for its generosity to the trust which has enabled us to create this garden."

Bed-bound patients can also enjoy the new play area, as a special ramp has been installed so they can be wheeled out in their bed. The Joely Bear Appeal was founded by Lisa and Leigh Renak, from Elstree, in memory of their son Joel, who died from cancer aged four in 1994.

He was treated at Barnet Hospital.

Lisa Renak said: "It is lovely to be able to give something back to Barnet Hospital but also to give something that children on the ward can appreciate and enjoy."
