Town councillors have called for an access road to be built when Borehawood's Fire Research Station site is developed.

At a recent meeting of Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council, Councillor Ernie Butler requested that another road to be built as part of plans for a new 250-home estate, to take the pressure off the only road to the site, Melrose Avenue, and improve access for emergency vehicles.

Councillor Bryan Stanley said that Hertsmere Borough Council should press the developer to provide access to the site through Furzehill School, and suggested that an existing access to the school, at the junction of Drayton Road and Brownlow Road, could be looked at.

He added: "I think there must be some serious consideration about an exit from this very substantial development.

"There must be some other exit for the traffic, other than it all coming down Melrose Avenue."

The town council also suggested a reduction in the number of homes, improvements to the junction of Station Road and Shenley Road and a fence to protect neighbouring allotments. McLean Homes' application is due to be discussed by the borough council on January 17.
