A plan to build 27 new homes on Green Belt land at a horticultural nursery in Shenley was opposed by parish councillors last week.

Tokonama Bonsai is seeking permission to build 13 new houses, a block of flats and an access road at its premises in London Road.

Shenley Parish Council objected to the plan last week because it was high density housing and people living nearby were concerned.

Because the land is in the Green Belt planning permission can only be granted by the borough council in exceptional circumstances.

Parish councillor Lynn Morris said: "We have had so much development in the village already, so why should we have any more?"

However, parish councillors said they would have supported the plan if it had been for affordable housing suitable for senior citizens.

Hertsmere Borough Council will take the parish council's views into consideration when it decides whether to approve the plan.
