Once again the shortage of leaders for the scout movement has been mentioned in the Times. However, I would point out that the scout movement does have an upper age limit of 65 years of age.

There are other organisations and companies which have an age limit policy, yet complain of shortages of help and staff. Therefore, I have less sympathy for the scout movemement, or any other organisation with an upper age limit, when it complains of these problems.

I should, however, mention that Tesco in Borehamwood does employ people over the age of 65. Some of us over-65s are quite active, both mentally and physically, and have a lot to offer in experience, that a younger person has not obtained.

Having been a school teacher, I am used to working with children, and at one time I was a leader in the scout movement. However, I would not volunteer to assist the scout movement because it took up too much of my time and I was out of pocket financially.

I was not really appreciated, apart from one or two compliments. One does not like being taken for granted. But it was rewarding at times, so good luck to anyone who takes up helping the scout movement themselves.
