Star Barnet FC midfielder Mark Gower suffered an "unprovoked" attack on Saturday night leaving him with serious facial injuries.

The 23-year-old, who signed from Spurs last season in a £32,000 deal, required ten stitches to his face after being glassed in a Barnet pub.

He was watching England's historic 5-1 victory against Germany with fellow player Ross Darcy when he was assaulted.

Gower missed Tuesday night's match against Dagenham and Redbridge and is expected to be out of action for at least two weeks.

Club bosses are anxiously awaiting the diagnosis of a specialist consultant as to the extent of his injuries.

Bees manager John Still confirmed his midfield playmaker had been involved in an incident but could not explain the attack.

"I have spoken to Mark and he was not involved in a fight," he said.

"He had been watching the England game but there was no reason for anyone to attack him."

Gower has made an encouraging start to this season's campaign, scoring two goals, and will be a big loss as the club strives to return to the Football League at the first attempt.

A club spokesman said: "Mark Gower needed ten stitches after being hit across his nose with a glass.

He saw a specialist yesterday and we are waiting for the results. It was an unprovoked attack and the police are not involved."

Bees' captain Greg Heald admitted the loss of Gower was a big blow to the team.

He said: "Mark has done really well and has scored some important goals so obviously we will miss him at the moment. The sooner he is back the better."
