Two new productions which explore the relationship between college lecturer and student in different ways open on consecutive nights at the Broadway Studio Theatre.

The popular Educating Rita opens on January 22. Written by Willy Russell (who also penned Blood Brothers and Shirley Valentine), the play was a West End hit in the 1980s before being made into a film.

It explores the growth of the relationship between lecturer Frank Bryant, a reluctant Open University tutor, and his student Rita, a brash, earthy hairdresser with a recently-discovered passion for higher education.

On January 23, David Mamet's controversial Oleanna opens and plays in rep alongside Educating Rita.

In 1992, Oleanna caused outrage in the press and near-riots in the audience. The struggle for power between a college professor and his student reaches a shattering climax in this tale from Mamet.
